Welcome to Wildlife Wednesday!

This week we are highlighting the Largemouth Bass, a well-known sportfish, found in most parts on the US. The biggest largemouth bass recorded was 22 pounds, while the average bass weighs 2 pounds. This species of fish is a top predator and typically reside in lakes, ponds, springs, and rivers.

Largemouth bass hunt by ambushing their prey, using docks, vegetation, or wood to hide. Their green scales allow them to blend into their hiding spot, then when their prey of choice appears... BOOM!! The bass springs into action striking up to 10 MPH with its gaping mouth that sucks the prey in.

Our corn snake Amber has had an eventful month!

For the past couple weeks, Amber has been refusing to eat, this is normal for some snakes to do as their appetite can fluctuate due to a number of reasons. After trying to feed for 4 weeks, we started to get worried and took a closer look into her habitat, we noticed Amber sitting in her humid hide, after closer inspection we found out she had laid eggs!

Now this wasn't just 1 or 2 eggs but a total of 19! Since Amber has never been near a male snake, these eggs were most likely infertile, we decided to remove her from the clutch and candle each egg to check if they were fertile. As expected, none of the eggs were fertile, more commonly known as "slugs".

Once the eggs were removed, we attempted to feed Amber and were successful! Now she can relax and resume her regular feeding schedule. Way to go Amber!!
