Back with another ✨Fun Fact Friday✨
This week with the Story of Hunter Springs here in Crystal River, FL
Long before it was a park, this crystal-clear spring was a gathering place for the Timucua people, who relied on its fresh water and abundant fish. Fast forward to the early 1900s: the spring was named after the Hunter family, who owned the surrounding land 👨👩👧👦
In the 1940s, the property was leased by American Legion Post 155, who turned it into a private swim spot called Legion Beach (or Legions Beach). For decades, it was the place for local families to cool off in the 72°F water. By the 1970s, the Legion gave up the lease, and the area fell into disuse. The beach grew over, and the name faded....
Then in 2008, the City of Crystal River stepped in. They cleaned it up, added a sandy beach, boardwalk, and kayak launch... all with minimal environmental impact. And in 2010, Hunter Springs Park officially opened to the public!
Today, it's a first-magnitude spring pumping 65 million gallons a day, a critical winter refuge for West Indian manatees! But for locals who remember, it'll always be Legions Beach. 🌊
Did you ever visit when it was Legions Beach!? If so, we would love to hear your experience!
