Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a day of reflection, remembrance, and celebration of Black freedom and resilience.

On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

As we honor Juneteenth, we invite you to explore the African American heritage woven into the fabric of Allegany County, the Mountain Side of Maryland. Visit local museums, historic sites, and cultural landmarks that share the stories of strength, resistance, and contribution.
