WIND CAVE RESUMES TOURS following elevator replacement and
modernization.

HOT SPRINGS, SD – Cave tours through Wind Cave will resume Tuesday, January 28, after the completion of a year-long project to replace and modernize the cave’s elevator system. During the construction project, begun last January, both cabs were replaced,
improvements were made to the shaft, and a new lift system was installed.

“We’re very pleased with the completion of this project,” said Acting Superintendent
Milton Haar. “It’s been a long wait since we stopped tours last May, and we are looking
forward to resuming tours through the world’s seventh-longest cave.”

Tours of the Garden of Eden will be offered at 10 a.m. with tours of the Fairgrounds
beginning at 1 p.m. The Garden tour has 150 stairs and lasts one hour. The Fairground
tour has 450 stairs and last an hour and a half.

Tickets can be reserved up to three days in advance by visiting recreation.gov. As visitation ramps up, more tours will be offered.

The visitor center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with new exhibits and the park
store run by the Black Hills Parks and Forests Association.

Be prepared when staying with us this summer!

Two complete road closures on U.S. Highway 385 will begin on Monday, May 20, 2024. Closure A is located between the road to the Pactola North Boat Ramp and Pactola Dam and will be completely closed to traffic for eight weeks, reopening by Friday, July 12, 2024. Closure B is located between S.D. Highway 44 and the road to the Pactola North Boat Ramp and will be completely closed to traffic for three weeks, with temporary openings on weekends and Memorial Day, reopening by Friday, June 7, 2024. Complete closures were deemed necessary for the safety of the travelling public and efficiency of the project due to the large amount of material being blasted and moved throughout the closure areas.

The Pactola North Boat Ramp will not be accessible during weekdays from Monday, May 20, 2024, through Friday, June 7, 2024. It will be accessible on weekends and on Memorial Day from the north. After Friday, June 7, 2024, the Pactola North Boat Ramp will only be accessible from the north. The North Boat Ramp will be accessible from all directions after Friday, July 12, 2024.

Access to the Pactola South Boat Ramp will not be impacted during these closures. Boaters can access the South Boat Ramp via Highway 16/Highway 385 or Sheridan Lake Road/Highway 385.
