This week is the perfect time to observe the Eta Aquariid Meteor Shower. Meteors from this shower can be seen April 15 – May 27 but, it will be at its peak this weekend. The best viewing of the Eta Aquariids will be May 5 and May 6 during the predawn hours. However, there should be good viewing for several days before and after the 5th and 6th. There should be no interference from moonlight as the new moon will be on May 8; at a location away from city lights, observers can see 10-20 meteors per hour.

Texas State Seal - Texas State Capitol
Unique only to Texas, France, Spain, Mexico, the Texas Republic, the Confederacy, and the United States have all laid claim to Texas land at some point over the past centuries. The reverse side of the state seal recognizes this history.
Also unique only to Texas, the Texas State Capitol building is the largest state capitol in the USA. Over 360,000 square feet of legislation!

Texas State Mammal
The Longhorn

Known for their true grit, these cattle have been around TX since the 1800s. They can weigh up to 1500 lbs and stand 5 ft tall at the shoulder. It has only been an official state symbol since 1995. The Texas Armadillo is the small state mammal, but the Panhandle doesn't see many of them.

Texas State Flower
Bluebonnet

Named the State flower in 1901, it can be found blooming from March-April. A popular myth is that it is illegal to pick Bluebonnets, but that's not true. It is, however, illegal to trespass onto someone's property to take pictures or pick flowers, so stick to road sides. Unfortunately, you have to travel south of the Panhandle to see them.

Texas State Bird
The Northern Mockingbird

In true Texas fashion, the 1927 legislation declaring the Northern Mockingbird the state’s official bird reasoned that the species is β€œa fighter for the protection of his home, falling, if need be, in its defense, like any true Texan."
