Few photographs have been as scrutinized or as controversial as the image of Lee Harvey Oswald standing in his backyard, holding a rifle and Marxist newspapers. This image became damning evidence against Oswald as it depicted him with the same type of rifle used to assassinate President John F. Kennedy. From the moment the photo surfaced, conspiracy theories abounded. Critics claimed it was a forgery, pointing to supposed inconsistencies in lighting and shadows, Oswald’s facial features, the proportionality of the rifle, and his seemingly precarious pose.

On December 12, 1962, President and Mrs. Kennedy hosted a Christmas party for White House staff. Contemporary newspaper accounts put the attendance around 1,200 guests, who received a print of Edward Lehman’s watercolor painting of the refurbished Red Room, signed by the President and First Lady.

Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy enter the hall and are joined by Mr. and Mrs. Malraux and Secretary of State Dean Rusk.
