I frequently see questions about tipping in local currency versus euros or dollars, etc. Although this very helpful article is regarding Cancun, it perfectly explains the situation that local workers all over the world are put in when they are given a currency that is not their own. I try to keep their needs in mind when tipping--and give them money they can put to use right away to take care of routine needs like groceries or bus fare. (Note: I recognize that there are exceptions in a few rare places, where the dollar may be more stable than a local currency that faces weekly inflation/devaluation.) Fortunately, AmaWaterways now offers the opportunity to prepay gratuities for the crew, the CM, local guides and drivers, and even some land extension packages. But you may still have other situations where you need to tip a bit in cash, such as in bars/cafés on your own, for hotel housekeepers or bellmen, etc.
