WILD AUGUST IS HERE

This month we’re looking at the women who shape a journey, sometimes in ways we don’t immediately notice.

From the meaning held in Himba and Herero dress to India’s extraordinary traditions, women guiding us through the bush, lionesses raising their cubs together and elephant matriarchs leading through experience.

A Himba woman, a safari guide, a lioness and an elephant matriarch. What connects them? More than you might think.

Elephants seem to alter the atmosphere around them.

They are powerful enough to shape landscapes, yet precise enough to explore the world with a delicate trunk. Their lives are built around relationships, families, friendships and knowledge carried between generations.

World Elephant Day is a celebration of all that elephants bring to the wild, and a reminder of what their future depends on.

To see an elephant is extraordinary.

To understand one is to realise just how much the world stands to lose.

What has stayed with you from an elephant encounter?

A lion may command your attention in an instant. But stay with the sighting, and another story begins to unfold.

A glance between two lions. A tail moving through the grass. The stillness before the pride begins to stir.

The wild is not only found in its grandest displays. It lives in the details, too. And those are often the moments that stay with us.

What draws your eye first, and what do you notice when you keep watching?

Today, as South Africa celebrates National Women’s Day, we celebrate women, not only for the titles they hold or the milestones others can see, but for the fullness of who they are.

We honour the women opening new doors in travel, guiding, conservation and business. We also honour the women whose courage is quieter; the women taking a first step, changing direction, finding their way, caring for others, creating, exploring—or simply being exactly who they are.

There is no single way to be brave, valuable or worthy of celebration.

Every woman carries a story worth honouring.

Happy National Women’s Day, with love from Khashana.

A ranger can name every bird in the bush.
But the truly memorable ones do something more.

They help you notice. They tell the story unfolding around you. They share their passion so generously that, for a few hours, you begin to see the world through their eyes.

Will spent four years as a ranger and later trained young men and women in the craft of guiding. For him, knowledge mattered—but communication, storytelling and the ability to create an emotional connection mattered just as much.

Your ranger is the lens through which you experience everything.

This World Ranger Day, we honour the people who protect wild places, teach with passion and help travellers carry wild stories home.

Some rangers stay with you long after the journey ends.
Is there one you still remember? We'd love to hear it.

July at Khashana is here!

This month, Will shares stories and honest reflections from Tanzania and the Great Migration. Closer to home, Brandy and Rhys enjoy a softer safari at Kariega, filled with elephants, Boma nights, bubble baths and time together.

Two very different journeys. One reminder that safari doesn’t have to look just one way.

You know you’ve arrived at the Great Migration when the runway needs to be cleared of wildebeest before you can land.

Travelling from Manyara to Fort Ikoma, the plane had to buzz the runway to encourage the wildebeest to move — and as they landed, tens of thousands were still streaming past.

Quite the welcome to the migration.

From a little author moment for Will to wide-open plains, first sightings, and plenty of wildlife drama, this is the kind of day that reminds us why Tanzania always has a way of pulling you back in.

More from Will’s time in the bush coming soon.

A little author moment in the bush — and of course, Will’s book made an appearance too 😉

It’s always special seeing those stories travel into the places that inspired them.

Where the plains do the talking.

Wide skies, golden grass, and that unmistakable Serengeti feeling.

It didn’t take long before the wildlife started delivering the kind of drama that only the bush can.

A reminder that every safari day writes its own story.

Sometimes it’s quiet. Sometimes it’s intense. Sometimes it all happens at once.

The smaller details are part of the story too.

From unexpected roadside moments to the smaller sightings in between, Tanzania has a way of making every scene memorable.

Day one, and Will had already taken far too many photos for us to choose from.

A strong start, with plenty more still to come.

Happy 250th Birthday to the United States of America.

To our American friends, wishing you a very happy Fourth of July.

May your day be filled with celebration, connection, and a sense of adventure — along with a little dreaming of the wild places still waiting to be explored.

With warm wishes,
The Khashana team

There are few animals in the bush with as much personality as baboons.

Expressive, social, clever, and endlessly entertaining, they offer a glimpse into the complexity of life in the wild. Spend time watching a troop and you’ll soon notice family dynamics, grooming rituals, playful youngsters, and the watchful presence of adults.

Safaris are not only about the big sightings. Sometimes, it’s the characters that stay with you most.
