One of the most recognisable birds in the bush — the lilac-breasted roller.

Known for its incredible colours, it’s not just a pretty sighting. During courtship, it performs dramatic aerial dives and rolls — which is exactly how it got its name.

Often seen perched in the open, quietly observing… before suddenly taking flight.

Keep an eye out for them next time you’re on safari.

There’s a quiet kind of presence to an elephant like this.

In the way it moves.
In the stillness.
In everything it carries with it.

You don’t need to be told — you can see it, feel it.

May has been a very special month for us as we officially celebrate 30 years of Khashana!

What started with a passion for sharing Africa has grown into a journey filled with unforgettable people, incredible places, wild adventures and memories we’ll carry with us forever.

From Will’s early safari days, to Brandy joining the journey, to now sharing these experiences with the next generation through Rhys — what a journey it’s been.

To our incredible Khashana team, thank you for the passion, care and dedication you bring to every journey. And to every guest, traveller and friend who has trusted us to help design your wild adventures over the last 30 years — thank you.

We feel incredibly lucky to have shared so many unforgettable moments across Africa and the world with all of you, and we can’t wait for the adventures still ahead.

Happy Birthday Khashana!

Happy birthday Sir David!!!

05/08/2026

Today marks the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough.
A voice, storyteller, and conservationist who has helped generations around the world fall in love with nature.

Will has been fortunate enough to meet Sir David a few times over the years, including once being nominated against him for an award through the BBC Natural History Unit.

David won, naturally.

But the evening also resulted in Will and Sir David throwing bread rolls back and forth across the formal dinner table. For someone who has become such a legendary and larger-than-life figure, there’s something incredibly sweet and human about imagining him sharing such a simple, playful moment.

Proof that legends can do both.

Happy 100th Birthday — and thank you for everything you’ve done to help the world see the beauty of this planet.

Travel isn’t only about where you go — but how the journey comes together and how it’s experienced along the way.

This month, we explore the thinking behind how Khashana designs each journey — from the details that shape an experience to the moments that stay with you long after.

Will is back in Mala Mala — and we’re following along.

Yesterday, they spent time with a young female leopard, watching as she moved through the grass, completely focused.

And then, suddenly — everything happened at once.

A burst of wings. A split second of action.

And just like that… it was over.

The bush doesn’t always give you the ending you expect — but it always gives you a story.

A very special moment in the bush.

This photograph was taken at MalaMala Game Reserve, where Will spent many hours observing and slowly habituating this female leopard over time.

Back then, leopard sightings were far less common than they are today, which made moments like this even more special.

After spending many hours with this leopard, Will was eventually able to photograph her with a brand new cub at the den — one of the first images he ever captured of a new leopard arrival.

It was a moment worth celebrating.

The photograph later became one of Will’s early fine art wildlife prints, titled “New Arrival.”

A reminder that some of the most powerful wildlife photographs come from patience, time, and deep respect for the animals we observe.

There are a lot of beautiful places out there — but knowing which ones are right for you is where it all changes.

In this month’s newsletter, we share a glimpse into what makes a Khashana journey different, along with a memorable sighting from the field and a few things we think are worth sharing.

We’re also heading somewhere new — and we’re looking forward to sharing that journey with you.

A new generation of the Styx Pride.

These lion cubs were photographed along the same river system at — home to one of the most fascinating lion bloodlines in Africa.

The Styx Pride has roamed this area for more than 50 years, with generations of lions continuing the legacy of the pride.

For Will, MalaMala holds a particularly special place. As both a ranger and a frequent visitor to the reserve over the years, he has been incredibly fortunate to witness almost every generation of the Styx Pride appear.

To watch that continuity in the wild — seeing new cubs arrive, grow, and eventually take their place in the pride — is one of the great privileges of spending time in the African bush.
