Our Spotlight this week focuses on David Cates . Our Senior Contract Services Specialist.

David has always been interested in aviation, beginning with the models of WWII aircraft he made as a child. Growing up in North Carolina, (where his brother and brother in law worked at RDU as Ramp Agents for Eastern Airlines), he was fortunate to have them take him countless times to experience the airport activities close up and personal. Upon graduating from High School, David was hired as a Ramp Agent with Piedmont Airlines. Within a year, (unsure of career expectations as most 19 year olds are), he joined the Navy, becoming an Aviation Electrician’s Mate, working on F14A fighter jets (Tomcats) as part of the East Coast’s first two F14A squadrons and serving onboard the aircraft carrier, USS John F Kennedy.

Having met his bride during the last year of his enlistment, David returned stateside but being unable to land a job in the aviation field, (economic downturn at that time), he took a detour and began a long career within the computer industry. In addition to obtaining an A.A.S in Business Administration along the way, he has performed many roles within Manufacturing, QA, Administration, Services, Marketing and Purchasing… all of which assisted in his being led to Southwest Airlines (by way of Monster.com).

David thoroughly enjoys working in support of aircraft maintenance, as a Senior Contracts Services Specialist within the MX Contract Services team. He learned Customer service at an early age, (cutting lawns and as a gas station attendant…before they became primarily self service), so Customer service and satisfaction remains the number one goal of his at Southwest and looks forward to the same result with the challenges faced in his present day to day activities.

David and his wife, DeeAnna have 5 kids (3 boys and 2 girls) in addition to 9 grandchildren. Along with his family and friends, his interests and hobbies include golf, movies, music, history, hiking, bowling, Southwest’s many culture events…brew and just enjoying life.

Would Like to take a moment to thank Jennifer Paine (Director of Technology) for coining the moniker "Shadow IT" in reference to what we do.

We LUV it so much that we are now calling ourselves the Tech Ops "SHadow IT" Ninjas.

If you look close enough you'll see the acronym...
