✈️ Travel tip: How much cash can you bring from the U.S. to the Philippines?
A lot of travelers think $10,000 is the maximum you’re allowed to bring.
That’s not actually the rule.
You can bring more than $10,000, but if the total amount you’re carrying is over $10,000 USD (or the equivalent in other currencies), it must be declared.
Here’s how it generally works:
🇺🇸 Leaving the United States
If you’re carrying more than $10,000 total in cash or certain monetary instruments, you must declare it to U.S. Customs.
🇵🇭 Arriving in the Philippines
Foreign currency over $10,000 USD (or equivalent) must also be declared to Philippine Customs. This can be done through the eTravel system before arrival or at customs at the airport.
💡 What “monetary instruments” means
These are items that function like cash, such as:
• traveler’s checks
• money orders
• cashier’s checks
Credit cards, debit cards, and bank account balances do not count.
💡 Important clarification
The $10,000 rule is a declaration requirement, not a limit.
You can bring more than $10,000, but you must declare it.
💡 Another common question
The rule applies to the total amount being carried. For example, if two people traveling together carry $6,000 each and the money is pooled together, it may need to be declared.
💡 Another tip
Bringing more than ₱50,000 Philippine pesos may require authorization from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
