The Danville Adult Baseball league will hold a meeting tomorrow, Saturday March 14th, at 2:00 pm at Market Garden Field to discuss the format of 2020 season and gauge interest. All returning players and new players are encouraged to attend.

DPC Fairgrounds, Dodgers get wins in final week before playoffs

DANVILLE, Va. — Danville-Pittsylvania County Fairgrounds and the Orkin Dodgers each earned wins over the West Landscaping Tigers on Sunday, Sept. 8, at Market Garden in Danville Adult Baseball League action. DPC Fairgrounds won 13-0 in five innings, while the Dodgers won 12-1 in three innings.

In the opener, DPC Fairgrounds plated three runs in the top of the first inning thanks to singles from Jacob Yates, Jon Wilson and Brad McDarmont. Up 3-0, DPC Fairgrounds tacked on eight runs in the third thanks to a big inning that saw them put up seven hits, including a homer by Bradley Langford and doubles by Humberto Carpio and Wilson.

DPC Fairgrounds added three more runs in the fourth to pull away.

Yates led the team with three hits, while Carpio, Wilson, McDarmont and Joseph Swanson each had two hits.

In Game 2, the Dodgers jumped on the scoreboard first. After a Tyler Grogan double to lead off the game, two batters later Cliff Hodges singles him in. Drew Wilson added an RBI single to right, and Eddie Cassada drove him in with an RBI double to make it 3-0.

The Dodgers added to their lead in the second. Mike McCorkle, Hodges and Wilson each had RBI hits and Chris King added a two-run hit as well as part of the big inning. The Dodgers scored three more times in the third thanks to RBI doubles by Hodges and Wilson, and an RBI fielder's choice by King.

The Tigers scored their lone run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single.

Playoffs begin on Sunday, Sept. 15. The Dodgers and Tigers play the opening game, with the winner facing top-seeded DPC Fairgrounds for the championship round.

DPC Fairgrounds, Tigers earn wins on Aug. 18
DANVILLE, Va. — Danville-Pittsylvania County Fairgrounds and the West Landscaping Tigers each picked up wins on Sunday, Aug. 18, at Market Garden in Danville Adult Baseball League action. DPC Fairgrounds edged the Orkin Dodgers 9-6 before falling to the Tigers 14-10 in five innings.

In the opener, the Dodgers took the early lead in the first inning as Tyler Grogan scored on an error. Ryan Dalton made it 2-0 moments later on Mike Matherly’s RBI single, and the Dodgers added one more run on a failed pickoff attempt to go up 3-0. In the bottom of the first, DPC Fairgrounds closed the gap to 3-2 on a double steal rundown and a Brad McDarmont RBI single.

In the second, DPC Fairgrounds went ahead 4-3 on Humberto Carpio’s two-run single up the middle. That score held until the fourth inning, when the Dodgers briefly surged back in front 6-4 on Dalton’s two-run homer and Matherly’s RBI single.

However, DPC Fairgrounds answered in the bottom half of the inning with a five-run frame highlighted by Jacob Yates’ three-run blast and McDarmont’s RBI single.

Logan Tate, Carpio and Bradley Langford each had two hits for DPC Fairgrounds, while Matherly led the Dodgers with three hits.

In the nightcap, the Tigers and DPC Fairgrounds had a scorefest over the first three innings, where all the runs were scored. The Tigers led 3-0 after the top of the first after loading the bases. Albert Keatts’ single helped get the scoring started, followed by Staples’ double. Meanwhile, McDarmont’s double helped DPC Fairgrounds get within 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning.

After both teams plated four runs each in the second, the Tigers exploded for seven runs in the top of the third despite just one hit. They took advantage of seven walks and a hit by pitch as part of the big inning. Although DPC Fairgrounds countered with a four-run effort in the bottom of the third that featured Yates’ second homer of the game and third of the day.

Despite all of the runs over the first three innings, both teams held each other scoreless over the next two frames before the game ended.

Tigers, Dodgers net wins on Sunday
DANVILLE, Va. — The West Landscaping Tigers and the Orkin Dodgers both collected victories on Sunday in Danville Adult Baseball League action played at Market Garden. The Tigers edged the Dodgers 6-4 in the opener, but the Dodgers rebounded with a 16-3 win in five innings against Danville-Pittsylvania County Fairgrounds to complete the day.

The West Landscaping Tigers took advantage of a Dodgers error with two outs to gain an early lead in the top of the first. After one run scored on the play, Chris Burch upped the Tigers’ lead to 3-0 with a two-run single through the left side. The Tigers added more runs on Dallas Smithers’ three-run homer to right-center field in the second inning, helped them go ahead 6-0.

The Dodgers inched back into it with Cliff Hodges’ two-run homer to right-center in the third. The Dodgers got a little closer in the sixth as Drew Wilson’s two-run double to left field trimmed the deficit to 6-4.

Although the Dodgers got the tying run aboard in the seventh, the Tigers closed the door for the win.

Smithers got the win on the mound, going four innings, while Vaughan Popeney closed it out. Offensively, the Tigers had six hits by six different players.

Tyler Grogan, Hodges, Mike McCorkle and Wilson each had a pair of hits for the Dodgers, who totaled 10 hits as a team.

In Game 2 of the day, the Dodgers pulled away to a big win by scoring multiple runs in each of their four innings. The scoring started in the first frame as T.J. Viracola’s RBI double to right field scored Hodges, and Wilson followed with a two-run single to left, scoring Patrick Adkins and Viracola, making it 3-0.

DPC Fairgrounds closed the gap in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded, an error on a fielder’s choice allowed two runs to score, cutting the Dodgers’ lead to 3-2. Yet, the Dodgers fought back with five runs in the bottom of the second. Hodges had an RBI fielder’s choice, Adkins had a two-run single, McCorkle had an RBI single and Viracola added an RBI sacrifice fly to push the Dodgers’ lead to 8-2.

Adkins and McCorkle added an RBI fielder’s choice and an RBI double, respectively, to extend the lead to 10-2, putting the Dodgers in control. The Dodgers added six more runs in the fourth as Aaron Taylor had a two-run single, Hodges had an RBI single, Adkins had a two-run double and McCorkle had an RBI single.

DPC Fairgrounds got a solo homer in the top of the fifth from Logan Tate, but it wasn’t enough to extend the game.

Viracola went the distance on the mound for the Dodgers, allowing just two hits while striking out eight in five innings.

Hodges, McCorkle and Taylor each had three hits, while Michael Matherly, Adkins and Wilson each totaled two hits apiece.

League play resumes on Sunday, Aug. 18, at Market Garden.

Dodgers, Tigers earn wins in DABL play
RINGGOLD, Va. — The Orkin Dodgers and West Landscaping Tigers each picked up a win on Sunday during Danville Adult Baseball League play held at Dan River High School. The Dodgers cruised past the Tigers 9-4, but the Tigers responded with a 12-9 win against Danville-Pittsylvania County Fairgrounds.

Dodgers pitching dominated the opening game of the day. T.J. Viracola threw four shutout innings with seven strikeouts, followed by two clean frames from Levi Pruitt, who had six strikeouts over three innings. They were backed up by a steady offense that put two runs up in the first inning thanks to three consecutive hits to open the game, which eventually led to Tyler Grogan and Michael Matherly scoring. Grogan came home again in the third to increase the Dodgers’ lead to 3-0.

The Dodgers tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning on RBI singles from Ryan Dalton and Drew Wilson, followed by more scoring in the seventh. Grogram drew a leadoff walk in the final frame, followed by a Matherly double, singles by Cliff Hodges and Dalton. Ahead 8-0, Wilson added a sacrifice fly to center to push the margin to nine.

The Tigers broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out grand slam by Dan Fallen.

Hodges continued his hot streak at the plate with a 4-for-4 effort, while Matherly finished with a pair of doubles.

The Tigers and DPC Fairgrounds had a tight battle in Game 2 of the day. DPC Fairgrounds opened with a three-run first inning, keyed by a leadoff homer from Logan Tate. Yet, the Tigers tied it immediately with three runs on a walk, two errors and three singles. Fairgrounds regained the lead in the top of the second on Humberto Carpio’s three-run blast, putting his team up 6-3.

After DPC Fairgrounds tacked on another run in the third, the Tigers rallied to take an 8-7 advantage by the bottom half of the inning. Aaron Taylor and Scott Slade singled to lead off, and Hunter Collins followed with a double. Although those were the only hits of the inning for the Tigers, they took advantage of one error, a groundout, two walks, a run-scoring wild pitch and two run-scoring passed balls.

After each team traded a run in the fourth, DPC Fairgrounds knotted the game at 9-9 in the fifth on an RBI groundout. The tie was ultimately broken in the bottom of the sixth by the Tigers, who plated three runs with the help of two errors and three hits.

Dallas Smithers picked up the win on the mound in relief after entering in the fifth inning.

Slade had three hits while Taylor and Collins finished with a pair of hits to lead the Tigers’ offense. Tate led DPC Fairgrounds with a 3-for-4 outing offensively.

Dodgers, Tigers pick up wins in latest DABL action
RINGGOLD, Va. — The Orkin Dodgers and West Landscaping Tigers each earned a win on Sunday during Danville Adult Baseball League play held at Dan River High School. The Dodgers topped Danville-Pittsylvania County Fairgrounds 13-7, but the Dodgers fell later in the day to the Tigers, 22-12 in six innings.

In the opening game, DPC Fairgrounds grabbed the early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Humberto Carpio’s RBI double drive in the first run, and Bradley Langford and Brad McDarmont each added RBI singles in the frame. Yet, the Dodgers settled in and answered with two big innings in the third and fourth. In the bottom of the third, the Dodgers got a two-run double by Mike McCorkle and an RBI double by Eddie Cassada as part of a six-run at-bat to surge ahead 6-3.

The following inning, DPC Fairgrounds pulled back within one, 6-5, on Jacob Yates’ solo homer to right field. The Dodgers responded immediately when Cliff Hodges led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo blast to center field. Chris King’s RBI single and a pair of bases-loaded walks helped the Dodgers extend their lead to 10-5 through four complete innings. From there, the Dodgers held on behind a solid pitching debut from Patrick Adkins, who through the final four innings in relief of Tyler Grogan.

The Orkin Dodgers totaled 11 hits, including two each by Michael Matherly, McCorkle and Cassada.

Yates, Logan Tate and Langford each had two hits for DPC Fairgrounds.

To finish the day, the Tigers and Dodgers fought in a back-and-forth battle that was ultimately decided by one big inning in which the Tigers scored 15 runs in the top of the sixth.

Early on, the Tigers opened with a three-run top of the first inning aided by RBI doubles from Calvin Easley and Hunter Collins. The Dodgers pulled within 3-2 by the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout and an RBI single by Drew Wilson. The Dodgers jumped ahead in the second inning on Grogan’s two-run single to center.

Collins put the Tigers back in front in the third with a two-run double. Two more runs scored later in the inning to extend their lead to 7-4. Again, the Dodgers answered with a pair of runs in their next at-bat to get back within 7-6.

The Dodgers shot in front, 9-7, in the fourth on Hodges’ two-run double and a Wilson RBI groundout.

The Tigers, however, couldn’t be contained in the top of the sixth. They rattled off 15 runs in the frame to pull away. Aaron Taylor, Dallas Smithers, Easley and Albert Keatts each had run-scoring doubles as part of the big inning. Although the Dodgers scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, it wasn’t enough.

Easley and Collins had three hits apiece, while Jackson Fowlkes drove in a team-high five runs to pace the Tigers. Taylor, Vaughn Popeney, Fowlkes and Keatts each finished with two hits. Meanwhile, Grogan led the Dodgers with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate.

League play continues on Sunday as games shift to Market Garden.

RINGGOLD, Va. — Danville-Pittsylvania County Fairgrounds picked up a pair of wins as the Danville Adult Baseball League play continued on Sunday at Dan River High School. DPC Fairgrounds pulled away from the West Landscaping Tigers 16-4 in six innings, then topped the Orkin Dodgers 9-5.

In the opener, the Tigers took a brief 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. After the first run scored on a wild pitch, Jackson Fowlkes crushed a two-run double to center field. He scored moments later on an RBI single by Chris Wyatt to make it 4-0.

DPC Fairgrounds answered in the bottom half of the inning by notching 11 runs, which was kick-started by a Humberto Carpio two-run homer and a two-run double by Cameron Gauldin to tie the score, 4-4. Carpio added a two-run double later in the inning as DPC Fairgrounds took a seven-run advantage.

DPC Fairgrounds added five more runs in the sixth to extend its lead, including one on a Gauldin solo shot to center and a three-run blast by Jon Wilson.

Carpio went 5-for-5 in the contest with five RBIs, while Wilson and Gauldin each had three hits to aid DPC Fairgrounds.

DPC Fairgrounds went ahead early in Game 2, plating three runs in the bottom of the first against the Dodgers with the help of an error and two RBI singles.

The Dodgers got on the scoreboard in the top of the third with Ryan Dalton’s two-run homer, getting them within 3-2. Yet, DPC Fairgrounds answered with a Carpio homer, an RBI double by Joseph Swanson and an RBI single by Brad McDarmont to make it 6-2. They added one more run in the frame to extend the lead to five.

Cliff Hodges smacked a two-run homer in the fifth to close the gap to 7-4, but DPC Fairgrounds got both runs back in its half of the inning. The Dodgers added a fifth run in the seventh on Patrick Adkins’ RBI groundout.

Logan Tate and Swanson each had three hits to led DPC Fairgrounds, while Hodges went 3-for-3 for the Dodgers.

Play resumes on Sunday, July 28, at Dan River High School.

Dodgers, DPC Fairgrounds net wins in Week 3
DANVILLE, Va. —Danville Pittsylvania County Fairgrounds topped the Orkin Dodgers 13-4 on Sunday at Lefty Wilson Field in Week 3 of the Danville Adult Baseball League. Earlier in the day, the Dodgers picked up a forfeit win over the West Landscaping Tigers (1-3).

DPC Fairgrounds (3-1) opened the game with four consecutive hits that led a 3-0 advantage. The Dodgers (2-2) got one back in the bottom of the first inning on Cliff Hodges’ single.

DPC Fairgrounds benefited from an error in the second to increase its lead to 4-1. Although the Dodgers answered with a run thanks to a throwing error in the bottom of the frame, DPC Fairgrounds responded with two runs in the third and two more in the fifth, extending the lead to 8-2.

The Dodgers plated two more runs in the fifth to inch back within 8-4, but DPC Fairgrounds added three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh — including two on Bradley Langford’s two-run homer to center.

DPC Fairgrounds totaled 18 hits on the day, including a double and two singles by Logan Tate, a homer and three singles by Langford, a triple, double and single by Humberto Carpio, three singles by Jon Wilson and a double and single by Toy Saunders.

Hodges led the Dodgers with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate.

League play continues on July 21.

Tigers, Dodgers pick up wins in Week 2
DANVILLE, Va. — The West Landscaping Tigers edged Danville Pittsylvania County Fairgrounds 8-7 to open the day, but the Tigers fell in the nightcap as the Orkin Dodgers dominated 19-5 in six innings on Sunday at Lefty Wilson Field in Week 2 of the Danville Adult Baseball League season.

In the opener, the West Landscaping Tigers (1-2) jumped ahead 2-0 in the opening frame on Brett Thomas’ two-run shot to left field. The Tigers tacked on three more runs in the second inning on a Calvin Easley homer to put DPC Fairgrounds (2-1) in a 5-0 hole. DPC Fairgrounds got one run back in the third and two more back in the fourth inning to get within 5-3.

The Tigers answered with a two-run fourth and one more run in the fifth to increase their lead to 8-3. However, the Tigers had to withstand a late rally from DPC Fairgrounds in the top of the seventh. With the help of a Humberto Carpio homer, DPC Fairgrounds pulled within 8-7 before the Tigers ended it.

Thomas got the win on the mound, striking out nine. He also went 1-for-1 with three walks at the plate.

The Orkin Dodgers (1-1) pulled away thanks to a 10-run sixth inning to earn their first win of the season in Game 2 against the Tigers. Early on, the Tigers had the upper hand after pushing four runs across on three singles and a double in the bottom of the first. The Dodgers countered with a four-run fourth inning of their own to tie it, 4-4. Tyler Grogan’s solo homer to lead off the inning started the rally.

The Dodgers added five runs in the fifth, including two on Patrick Adkins’ two-run blast to center field, as they went ahead 9-4. Although the Tigers got one run back in the bottom of the fifth on Chris Burch’s solo homer, the Dodgers batted around in the sixth. Grogan had two hits in the sixth inning alone and Drew Wilson had a two-run hit as well as the Dodgers totaled 10 runs on five hits, two walks, two hit-by-pitches and several fielder’s choice plays.

Levi Pruitt and Ryan Dalton both combined to pitch for the Dodgers, with Pruitt earning the win.

Grogan led the Dodgers with four hits, while Dalton and Cliff Hodges each had three.

The DABL takes a break for the weekend of July 7. Games resume on July 14.

Danville Adult Baseball League opens 2019 season
DANVILLE, Va. — Danville-Pittsylvania County Fairgrounds opened the 2019 Danville Adult Baseball League season with a pair of wins on Sunday at Lefty Wilson Field. DPC Fairgrounds topped the Orkin Dodgers 14-2 in five innings, then beat the West Landscaping Tigers 10-2.

In the opener, the Orkin Dodgers (0-1) took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Ryan Dalton’s RBI double. However, DPC Fairgrounds (2-0) jumped in front, 8-1, by the bottom of the inning by churning out eight runs in seven hits, including a big home run by Jacob Yates. DPC Fairgrounds added another run in each of the second, third and fourth innings before ending the game early on Joseph Swanson’s three-run homer, his second of the game.

Humberto Carpio added a home run as well for DPC Fairgrounds, which had 16 hits total.

The Dodgers’ second run came on Patrick Adkins’ solo homer in the third.

Jon Wilson picked up the win, going all five innings on the mound in Game 1.

DPC Fairgrounds completed the doubleheader sweep by pulling away late against the defending champion West Landscaping Tigers (0-1). Tied 1-1 through three innings, DPC Fairgrounds inched ahead in the bottom of the fourth as four consecutive singles helped push a run across. Although the Tigers countered with a run in the top of the fifth, DPC Fairgrounds scored five runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth — including Swanson’s second homer of the day — to go up 10-2. Although the Tigers added two runs in the seventh, it wasn’t enough.

The DABL continues play on Sunday, June 30, at Lefty Wilson Field.
