Welcome to the Salmon Capital of the World. Today’s stop in Alaska is Ketchikan.

Ketchikan is one of the rainiest spots in Alaska…so have your rain gear ready the second you step off that ship.

A few things to know before you go:
⚠️ If you’re visiting via Norwegian Cruise Line…those ships dock about 7 miles from downtown so give yourself 30 minutes to get to town.
⚠️ Most other lines dock right in the middle of everything

Our favorite things to do:
🎣 Deadliest Catch crabbing boat excursion
🏘️ Creek Street (hit this one in the afternoon when it’s less crowded)
🗿 Saxman Village
🪵 Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show
🏬 Walk the downtown area
🌊 View the Misty Fjords
🚤 Take a duck boat tour
🌳 Zipline through the Tongass National Forest
🐳 Take a whale watching tour

Summer bonus: thousands of salmon gather to spawn upstream. It’s so cool to watch. Oh…and ship yourself some smoked salmon home. We promise you won’t regret it. Check out

Where to stay:
Black Bear Inn
The Landing Hotel
Inn at Creek Street
Waterfall Resort Alaska
Steamboat Bay Fishing Club
Salmon Falls Resort

Where to eat and drink:
🦀 George Inlet Lodge (for all you can eat crab)
🎣 Alaska Fish House
🥘 Dock Street Yard
🍺 108 Taphouse

✨ Celebrating Elizabeth’s 1st Wishaversary! ✨

Sometimes the best journeys aren’t the ones that happen in a straight line.

While this marks Elizabeth’s first Wishaversary with Second Star Wishes, her story with our team actually began before that. The timing wasn’t right then, but we’re so grateful our paths found their way back together!!

Over the past year, we’ve loved watching Elizabeth continue to grow her business, expand into new vacation experiences, and step out into her community to educate and inspire travelers. She’s embraced new opportunities, challenged herself to learn more, and continues to show up with a genuine passion for helping others create meaningful travel memories.

Elizabeth, we’re so happy you’re here and can’t wait to see what comes next. Congratulations on your first Wishaversary!

✨ Celebrating Katlyn’s 1st Wishaversary! ✨

One year ago, Katlyn joined our Second Star Wishes family, and what a wonderful year it has been.

Building a successful travel business takes dedication, heart, and a commitment to serving others well, and Katlyn has embraced that journey every step of the way. We have loved watching her grow, learn, and create unforgettable experiences for her clients.

Katlyn, thank you for being part of our team and for the care you pour into helping travelers turn their wishes into realities.
Here’s to an amazing first year and many more adventures ahead!

Today’s Alaskan stop: Icy Strait Point

Icy Strait Point might be the most {underrated}stop on an Alaska cruise.

It’s located just outside Hoonah…a Tlingit village of about 900 people. This port is privately owned and deeply rooted in Native culture. It’s actually the largest Native-owned cruise destination in Alaska.

It feels NOTHING like the busier ports. She is much more relaxed, more authentic, and oh so beautiful.

What to do here:
🐋 Whale watching (honestly some of the best in Alaska). The migration of humpback whales, takes place right in this region + is at its peak from the end of April to the beginning of October. During the summer months, the whales travel from Hawaii to Alaska and back again.
🎿 The ZipRider: It’s one of the longest zip lines in the world and the views coming down are unreal.
🏔️ Gondola ride up the mountain for panoramic views
🐻 Bear & Wildlife Viewing: Take an excursion to the Spassky Creek area, known for having some of the highest concentrations of coastal brown bears per square mile on earth.
🦅 Walk to Hoonah: Take a scenic stroll or a quick shuttle into Hoonah, the largest Tlingit village in Alaska. You can visit the carved totem poles, watch local fishermen, and spot bald eagles.
🌊 Visit The Tide Pools: Stroll the massive pebble beaches right by the cruise docks to search for colorful starfish and other marine life at low tide.
🌳 Visit Chichagof Island
🐦 Visit Point Adolphus

What to eat:
🦀 Fresh Dungeness crab (wherever it’s on the menu)
🥩 Duck Point Smokehouse in Hoonah
🐟 The Fisherman’s Daughter in Hoonah
🌮 Wild Tacos
🍲 Oso Gordito

What to drink:
🍺 The Office Bar in Hoonah .hoonah
☕️ Scotty’s Cafe in Hoonah
🍩 Lil Gen’s Donuts

Where to stay:

Icy Strait Point itself is a privately owned cruise port and does not have hotels. For lodging, you will want to stay in Hoonah, Alaska, the neighboring Native Tlingit village just a 1.5-mile walk or short shuttle ride away.

🏨 Icy Strait Lodge

This is absolutely the port where you slow down and take it all in!

Freedom isn’t free …and today we remember the ones who paid that price.

Today’s stop on our Alaskan adventure: Stika. Be sure to save this for your visit…and check out our other posts in this Alaska series.

Fun fact: Sitka is the largest city by land area in the entire United States. She’s bigger than the state of Delaware. Wild, right?

Ships either tender into Sitka or dock about 15 minutes from the center of town…so plan accordingly based on your itinerary (if visiting here by sea).

Did you also know? Sitka is known as the heart of the Russian influence in Alaska and once served as the capital of Russian America. In the 18th century, Russian missionaries erected St. Michael’s Cathedral, which became North America’s first Russian Orthodox church. Today, it’s a national historic landmark where hymns are sung in Tlingit, Alutiiq, Yu’pik, and Slavonic. Designed with onion-shaped domes and gold crosses, its old-world architecture transports travelers back in time.

What should you see and do?
📍 Visit the Sitka National Historic Park (Totem Park)
🦅 Visit the Alaska Raptor Center
🐻Visit Fortress of the Bear
🌲Stroll through the Tongass National Forest
🐋Go whale watching
⛪ Visit Baranof Castle Hill
🌌 Experience the aurora (late Sept through March)

Where to stay?
🛏️Sitka Hotel
🛏️Aspen Suites Hotel Sitka
🛏️Eagle Bay Inn
🛏️🎣Sitka Point Lodge
🛏️🎣Talon Lodge @ talonlodge

Where to eat and drink?

🍲Ludvig’s Bisto
🥣Ludvig’s Chowder Cart
🥞Wildflower Cafe & Bakery
🍲Ashmo’s
🍕Mean Queen
☕Backdoor Cafe

Food tips: get a reindeer dog while you’re there, and also make sure you try a duck fart.

Your Alaska adventures are still waiting! Up next, we are headed to Icy Strait Point.

Two of our Second Star Wishes Travel Specialists (Katlyn Moore & Elizabeth O’Donnell) are in California this week representing our agency at an exclusive, invite-only EarMarked by Disney event…and I am just so proud of these two.

They are out touring the Disneyland hotel properties firsthand, attending a Southern California trade show to build real relationships with local partners, and receiving classroom training directly from Disney. All of it with one goal…to come back and serve their clients and our team at an even higher level.

This is what true professional development looks like in the travel industry. It’s not always a webinar or a quick certification. It’s taking the time to get on a plane, being in the room, and doing the work. Experiencing the destinations and places we’re sending our clients - firsthand.

For these ladies…their drive, their passion for Disney, and their professionalism is fully on display and I couldn’t be more proud.

At Second Star Wishes, this is the standard we hold for ourselves. Our team doesn’t just “book Disney”…they know Disney with and in-depth and tacit knowledge. Moments like this are exactly why. 🌟

Skagway has a population of under 1,200 people…and it is one of our favorite places on earth. Be sure to save this for your Skagway must-dos + check out the posts before this for more stops in our Alaska series.

Two things we tell every single client who visits Skagway: take the train and just explore.

The White Pass & Yukon Railway is a MUST. The history behind it is fascinating and the views are unlike anything you’ve seen. There are different route options too…some include bus and train combos that give you totally different scenery and photo ops.

Once you’re back in town, walk around! Skagway is small and totally walkable.

Must try eats and drinks:

🍺 Skagway Brewing Company
☕ Glacial Coffeehouse
🎣 Skagway Fish Company
🏛️ Red Onion Saloon (Gold Rush history, a former brothel, now a restaurant and museum with daily tours)
⚰️ Gold Rush Cemetery shuttle
🍛Olivia’s Bistro .skagway
🩶Klondike Doughboy

Where to stay:
🛏️ Historic Skagway Inn
🛏️ Pack Train Inn B&B
