Visions of Istanbul…from the Sultan’s summer palace to the local markets, the haman (an incredible experience!), the spice market, the Grand Bazaar and the underground Cistern. There is so much to see and do in this city!

Oh Istanbul! What an amazing an vibrant city! And the food, well, that deserves its own post! Our visit began at the legendary Blue Mosque, named for the beautiful blue Iznik tiles that cover its walls. Close by you can Hagia Sophia, originally a Christian Basilica built by Justinian in the 6th century, then converted to a mosque during the Ottoman Empire. After nearly a century as a museum, Hagia
Sophia became a mosque again in 2020 but you can still see the mosaics hidden beneath the paint from the early Christians. Our guide brought the history to life as walked through these iconic symbols of Istanbul!

When you find a special place in the world, it’s hard to leave! We loved everything about the Museum Hotel in Cappadocia - the friendly staff, delicious food, the attention to every detail from the animals on property (pigeons, cats, dogs, turtles, peacocks) to the historical artifacts from the origins of this cave hotel. What a perfect honeymoon escape! 🇹🇷

Hiking through history in Cappadocia! First we visited the Goreme Open Air Museum to visit the churches, chapels and monasteries carved into the fairy chimneys rock formations from the 4th century with frescos painted on the walls. This is where the Christians came to escape the Romans in Jerusalem, and the first Orthodox Churches were established. We really enjoyed the hike through the massive Zelve Valley, now known as the Zelve Open Air Museum. It is among the earliest-settled and last-abandoned monastic valleys in Cappadocia, where both Christians and Muslims lived in harmony until 1924 when the Christians had to leave as a result of the exchange of minorities between Greece and Turkey. Another fascinating stop is Monks Valley where the wind and water have eroded the soft tuff rocks and volcanic ash, creating unique mushroom topped formations. It is home to several ancient cave churches and chapels, built between the 4th and 13th centuries by Christian monks during the Byzantine period. They are considered to be some of the oldest and best-preserved examples of rock-cut architecture in Cappadocia. 🇹🇷
