Whale Sharks can be individually identified by their characteristic spots and markings, which has allowed for abundance, residency, and connectivity to be assessed within and among aggregation sites across their distribution (Arzoumanian et al. 2005). Most researchers and community contributors are using Sharkbook.ai (formerly whaleshark.org), a global collaborative photo-identification platform, to collate and share individual sighting data. As of March 2025, 15,740 individual Whale Sharks had been identified globally since 1985 (Sharkbook.ai unpubl. data). (iucnredlist.org)
