Just a few minutes outside our town of Parsons sits the U.S. Forest Service - Monongahela National Forest's Horseshoe Campground and Recreation Area 🌳

🪏 Did you know Camp Horseshoe was one of the only eastern recreation areas constructed by the CCC for organizational use? Now stewarded by Ohio West Virginia YLA, these twin New Deal sites have given kids a place to explore nature for nearly a century!

🥾 Explore the CCC's legacy along the easy Two Camp Trail or gear up for a section hike along the 316-mile Allegheny Trail!

🤿💦 The shallow and calm waters of Horseshoe Creek are the perfect place to cool off and provide a fun snorkeling spot to discover Appalachia's amazing aquatic animal diversity!

🍂🥾 Did you know, before it was a trail or part of a Tyler Childers song, West Virginia’s Cranberry Glades was home to a prison with no walls?

Future Civil Rights leaders, playwrights, and authors were imprisoned at Mill Point by the harsh nature of Pocahontas County’s rugged topography as much as they were by the law ⛰️🌱

📍 Located right off the Highland Scenic Highway between Richwood and Marlinton, explore the history of Mill Point along the 7-mile Cowpasture Loop or take the easier 2-mile out-and-back from the eastern trailhead near the boardwalk parking area!

🍂 Seems like fall is right around the corner, and we've even heard rumors of a few leaves starting to turn 👀 Spanning the highest elevations in West Virginia, the Monongahela National Forest region gets the first glimpse of the colorful autumn show!

🍁⏰ While there's no way to perfectly predict when peak foliage will occur, especially with drier-than-average conditions, the relationship between elevation and temperature provides insights into nature's chlorophyll calendar!

Late September to Early October:
→ Dolly Sods and Roaring Plains Wilderness
→ Spruce K**b and Seneca Creek Backcountry
→ Highland Scenic Highway and Cranberry Glades
