🥾 Have you hiked the southernmost trail in the U.S. Forest Service - Monongahela National Forest?

🌳 The aptly named 4.7-mile South Boundary Trail in the 5,144-acre Big Draft Wilderness is just 15 minutes from downtown White Sulphur Springs, featuring a steep ascent through dense oak and hickory forest.

ℹ️✍️ Did you know the term "Draft," also known as a draught, is an Appalachian geographic naming convention brought over by Scots-Irish and English settlers and refers to smaller streams or valleys where water is "drawn" down mountain slopes.

Established in 2009, Big Draft is the smallest of the Mon's 8 wilderness areas, encompassing nearly 4.5% of the total 115,000 protected acres. Despite its smaller size, the area packs plenty of adventure with over 13 miles of trail and easy access to the historic Blue Bend Recreation Area!

UPDATE ON FOREST ROAD 86 / WILLIAMS RIVER ROAD

The Monongahela National Forest is currently repaving the entire 18.6 mile stretch of the Williams River Road. A much needed project following extreme rainfall events that caused road degradation and failure in multiple spots.

The section currently closed is from the beginning of the road (Dyer end) to White Oak Rd. The remaining sections are presently open.

Multiple crews are working 7 days a week and are tackling multiple sections of the road at a time, while maintaining as much access as possible. We anticipate construction activities for this season to conclude by November 6, at which point the entire road will reopen. Final completion of the project will occur next spring with final paving of the wearing surface.

The Monongahela National Forest is closely coordinating with WV DNR to allow trout stocking trucks access along the Williams River.

UPDATE ON FOREST ROAD 76 / CRANBERRY RIVER ROAD

Road construction projects along two short stretches of the Cranberry River Rd are ongoing. These construction projects are repairing embankment failures caused by severe rain events in recent years.

While we had intended to open the entirety of FR76 by the end of October, heavy rains in recent days have caused delays in road repairs.

For Site 1, near Barrenshe, we anticipate this section of road to remain closed through November 6.

🥾👀 Did you know there's a hidden overlook trail inside our town of Marlinton? This 0.75-mile route provides a secluded view of the historic downtown and the Greenbrier River!

📍🅿️ Park at the 2nd Avenue Greenbrier River Trail parking lot and walk to the old railroad water tower, where a short path approaches the road before winding up the mountain!

🌧️ ⚠️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹! With heavy rain continuing throughout the week, it's more important than ever to recreate responsibly in the U.S. Forest Service - Monongahela National Forest region.

🗣️ Always let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return - whether it's just a short 1-mile walk or a wilderness expedition, there's limited cell service in many parts of the forest

🧤 Check the weather before heading out and be sure to pack a layer of warm clothes and a small first aid kit with a safety blanket - conditions in the High Alleghenies can change quickly

🧭 Know your route before hitting the trailhead and check whether there are any required river fords or other difficult-to-navigate forest features. Grab a map from one of our ranger stations if tackling a longer hike or ride 🗺️
