Back in 1971, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort pool looked nothing like the iconic Lava Pool we know today 🌺

Instead of a towering volcano, the original Nanea Volcano Pool featured a low lava-rock wall, hidden alcoves, cascading waterfalls, and a much smaller waterslide. The lush foliage grew so dense over time that it completely concealed the longhouses behind it—turning the whole area into a tropical hideaway.

And here’s the fun part: to get to the slide stairs, guests actually had to walk under a waterfall… which, as you can imagine, took some people a minute to figure out 💦

Even wilder? From 1971 to 1978, this was the only pool at the resort. The spot where the Oasis Pool sits today was originally a putting green—part of Walt Disney World’s early “Vacation Kingdom” vision.

A totally different vibe… but pure Disney magic all the same ✨
