🎨 Another beautiful piece of art has made its way to Decatur!

We love seeing murals pop up all around town, adding color, character and personality to our community. This beautiful new mural at the Decatur Public Library-Illinois was created by local artist Shannon Cook — the same artist behind the Bikini Tree on the cover of our Spring-Summer Visitor Guide this year! 🌴👙

So much local talent helping make our community even more beautiful! ❤️

🎨 A new piece of public art has been added to Decatur!

The new “Advocate” mural at Webster-Cantrell Youth Advocacy was created by local artist Antonio Burton, aka Toni Picasso, as part of the Untold Stories initiative.

This meaningful project was made possible through a partnership between the Heart of Illinois Community Foundation, Illinois Arts Council and Webster-Cantrell Youth Advocacy. ❤️

Each letter in “Advocate” has its own unique design, representing the many different ways we can use our voices, support others and make a difference in our community.

We love seeing new public art throughout Macon County, especially pieces that tell a story and bring an important message to our community!

🚲 Ready to ride? The Decatur Bicycle Club’s 41st Annual Amish Country Bicycle Tour is on September 19!

Proceeds benefit cycling projects in the Decatur area, including youth access and education, advocacy and bike safety.

It was a fun day filled with golf, great company, and plenty of smiles, all while supporting a wonderful cause in our community. 🏌‍♂️☀️

It was an honor to be there for the dedication of the new Ellsworth Dansby Jr. Memorial Statue at Ellsworth Dansby Jr. Magnet School. What a meaningful way to celebrate a remarkable piece of Decatur’s history and make sure that story continues to be shared for generations to come.

Decatur native and renowned sculptor Preston Jackson created the bronze statue honoring Ellsworth “Junior” Dansby Jr., who served as the first U.S. Air Corps Master Sergeant and chief mechanic of the African American fighter squadron known as the Tuskegee Airmen.

The statue is also an important addition to the Macon County African American Heritage Trail and joins the historical marker already located at the school, helping students and visitors learn more about the Dansby family’s lasting impact on our community.

A special thank you to Preston Jackson for creating such a powerful tribute, to Jack McCoy for his generosity, and to the Decatur Public Schools Foundation and Heart of Illinois Community Foundation for helping make this lasting memorial possible.

It was wonderful to see so many people come together to honor a local legacy that deserves to be remembered and shared.
