I've watched people drive 4 hours to a trailhead with nothing
but Google Maps on their phone.
No topo. No offline maps. No backup.

never acceptable, here's how I actually navigate off-grid:
🗺 Gaia GPS — daily driver. Best topo + offline maps for
USFS and BLM land. $40/yr and worth every penny.
🛰 onX Offroad — land access. Shows you private vs. public
boundaries and gate locations BEFORE you're 40 miles in
staring at a locked gate.
🌍 Google Earth — pre-trip only. Fly your route in 3D at
home. Spot the problems before you're committed to them.
📐 CalTopo — desktop planning. Elevation profiles, travel
time estimates, and custom PDF maps for your glove box.
📍 Google Maps — leave it for finding gas in town. Seriously.
None of these work alone. Together they cover every scenario.
