PHOTO ESSAY // Tanner's Return

As you may well know, Trouts own was recently diagnosed with gastric cancer. While he still has a big battle ahead, he was able to sneak in a fishing outing in between chemo sessions.

Swing by the blog to check out photos from the day and a recap of the day in Tanner's own words...

"What does it mean to be back? It means being present in the moment and making the best out of each day. The end goal for me currently is to go 1-0 every damn day for as long as possible and that is exactly what happened when I got back out on the water with some of my best buddies." [ LINK IN BIO ]

ICYMI - The Current Podcast featuring

In the most recent episode of our shop podcast - The CURRENT, host Rick Mikesell and co-host Ivan Orsic are joined by everyone's favorite traveling angler - the one and only Brian O'Keefe. Brian describes himself as the "most lucky man in the world" as he's spent the better part of the last 50 years traveling the world in search of fish, adventure, and the perfect fly fishing photo.

Brian, Rick, and Ivan start with Brian's origin story as a youth with a fly rod and Instamatic camera in hand. After a brief review of his inception as a fly fishing bum with camera, the gang moves on to some all-time stories about Brian's time spent adventuring the world in search of any species that swims.

On 3/10/23, our good friend & Trouts own Tanner Smith (aka ) was diagnosed with Stage IV gastric cancer. Tanner has quite the battle ahead of him with multiple rounds of chemotherapy, surgeries, procedures, and appointments scheduled in the coming months. Of course, this will not be an inexpensive venture. With a long and hard fight ahead of him, we want to help Tanner, his family, and his support system out financially, take some stress off, and let him focus on fighting this battle.

Ole' San Jay, the rambling man, has explored darn near every nook and cranny of the West in search of trout and he is currently sidelined from the action. While the West's trout certainly appreciate the break, we know there are plenty more salmonids for him to rope in on big, bushy dry flies presented along undercut banks. We reckon that the road trip of life ain't over for ole Tanner Smith, it's just getting started. Whether you've exchanged fishing stories, he's recommended bugs to you in the shop, you've shared the water with him, watched a game with him, shared a cold frosty beverage with him, or spent any time with him at all, please consider helping him get the care he needs to get back out on the water where he belongs.

We will continue to update as everything progresses with Tanner's battle. Thank you for all of your support, thoughts, prayers, and all of the positive vibes you've sent along to Tanner and the Smith family.

SNOWPACK UPDATE - 2/3/23 EDITION

As we head into the second month of 2023, snow-covered streets and consistent sub-freezing temperatures are stark reminders that we are in the midst of yet another Colorado winter season. Most recently the annual bellwether of winter forecasting, good ‘ole Punxsutawney Phil, woke up yesterday morning and saw his shadow, signaling another 2 months of winter to come. While the news of an extended Winter certainly contrasts with the inevitable off-season thoughts of bent rods and time on the water with friends, we all have to be mindful that our winters are a necessary evil to the pastime we all cherish and enjoy.

14 Tips for Improving Your Sight Fishing Game for Trout

One of our favorite ways of targeting fish here in Colorado is sight fishing. For those uninitiated, sight fishing is the act of spotting a fish, casting to that fish, and then hopefully, catching that fish. It is one of the most exciting ways you can catch trout on a fly rod.

The spot, the stalk, and the successes and the failures of sight fishing can account for some of the most visually compelling moments of your fly fishing career.

Now, spotting fish is not always the easiest of tasks. With that in mind, we put together a not-so-quick list of tips and tricks to help level up your sight fishing game.

Check out the tips over on the Trouts Journal!

PHOTO ESSAY // Michigan Summer

It's forecasted to snow again in Denver and you won't catch any of us complaining. It is winter after all and our rivers always benefit from a healthy snowpack.

Nevertheless, we find ourselves pining for some humid summer days chasing smallmouth and muskie with the crew.

There's some proper winter fishing going on right now, but if you're looking to get a little taste of summer...check out the brand new PHOTO ESSAY from our trip this past summer. [ LINK IN BIO ]

A Q&A with CHUCK

is best known for hitting dingers and tracking down fly balls in Coors Field. But, over the past five or si years, he's grown to be wildly passionate about fly fishing.

In the last edition of The CURRENT, Charlie sat down with of TROUT Magazine to talk about what gets Charlie fired up to chase fish with flies, how the worlds of professional baseball and fly fishing intersect, and what sits atop his fly fishing "to-do" list. [ LINK IN BIO ]

Woah, big gulps huh?

It's tiny bug season on the tailwaters and the fish are perfectly fine with it. Load up on some small flies, some light tippet, a dash of confidence, and see something cool this weekend.

Welp, see ya later.
