STATE PARK IN DESTIN: The State of Florida officially closed on the Destin waterfront property Thursday morning, finalizing the acquisition.

Back in September, Gov. DeSantis and the state Cabinet approved the purchase for nearly $84 million, converting land zoned for luxury condominiums into public parkland.

The property sits adjacent to the Gulf Islands National Seashore and shares its western boundary with the City of Destin’s Norriego Point Beach Access and Park. The sellers originally planned to develop 80 luxury condos on the site after purchasing it in 2016 and 2017.

Plan to be at Captain Royal Melvin Heritage Park on Sunday, December 14, 2025 for the City's Holly Jolly at the Harbor. Parks and Rec is offering market activities from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and from 3-5 p.m. there will be refreshments, cookie decorating, oyster crafts sponsored by the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance (CBA), and a variety of performers including the Fort Walton Beach Brass Band and Destin High School Band. Expect a nod of twinkle around 4 p.m. with a visit from Santa.

Furry friends are welcome, and the event is entirely outdoors. Donations of unopened, non-perishable items will be collected for families in need.

Please note, this is also the date of the much-anticipated Boat Parade!

Beach folks…the rip current risk remains high even though the disturbance has moved inland. The beach conditions do get better for the weekend into next week so you’ll be able to go in the water!
