U.S. 98 Widening Project Set to Begin in Okaloosa County

Chipley– The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will begin construction activities on the State Road 30 (U.S. 98) widening project the week of Tuesday, Sept. 5.

The $33.5 million project will widen U.S. 98 from Airport Road to the Okaloosa/Walton County line from four to six lanes. Other improvements include constructing new sidewalks and bicycle lanes along both sides, adding a new traffic signal at the Indian Bayou Trail/Restaurant Row intersection and drainage upgrades.

Work will initially focus on the west end of the project, between Airport Road and the western entrance to Henderson Beach State Park. Drivers can expect intermittent lane closures on this section to occur from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. beginning Sunday, Sept. 10.

Motorists are reminded to use caution, watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway and to obey the posted speed limit when traveling through the work zone. Work is slated for completion in fall 2020.
