The History of Disney Springs: A Story Before Disney

Before Disney Springs became the bustling shopping, dining, and entertainment district we know today, the area had a rich history that dates back long before Walt Disney set his sights on Central Florida.

The land where Disney Springs now stands was once home to Native American tribes, including the Timucua people, who thrived along Florida’s waterways. Centuries later, during the 1800s, the region became a hub for agriculture and cattle ranching, with settlers using the natural springs and lakes for survival.

Fast forward to the 1960s, when Walt Disney’s dream of Walt Disney World was taking shape, and the idea of a shopping village within the resort was born. In 1975, the Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village opened as a quaint, relaxing retreat for locals and Disney guests alike. Over the years, it evolved through multiple name changes—Walt Disney World Village, Disney Village Marketplace, and later Downtown Disney—each transformation bringing new restaurants, shops, and experiences.
