A Hazara man poses for a portrait atop Dara e Ajdar in Bamyan Valley of Central Afghanistan. Know as the Dragon Mountian, local legend has it that the great Hazrat Ali once slayed a drag that was terrorizing the residents of the valley below. The spine of an ancient rock formation was created by mineral deposits from springs that still flow from Dara e Ajdar. Our host passionately explained that the springs are the tears of the slain beast, and the rocky crevasse seen in the background was created when Ali slew the ancient beast.

The Caves of Bamyan: A cultural masterpiece carved into the rock
The Caves of Bamyan are a series of Buddhist cave monasteries carved into the side of a cliff in the Bamyan Valley of Afghanistan. The caves date back to the 6th century AD and contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art in the world.
The two most famous caves contained two colossal statues of Buddha, which were over 1,500 years old. However, the statues were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001, in an act of religious extremism.
Despite the destruction of the Buddha statues, the Caves of Bamyan remain a significant cultural and historical site. The caves are still home to several Buddhist murals and paintings, and they are a popular tourist destination.
