✨ Empowering Women in Travel: NEW Podcast Episode

Although women make up more than half of the global tourism workforce, they’re far from operating on a level playing field.

From cultural barriers to limited access to education, funding, and support, systemic inequalities hold women back—impacting not just their futures, but the well-being of their communities and the environment.

In my latest podcast episode, I sat down with Tara McCallum from a company leading the way in creating real change—from hiring female guides in regions where that’s rare to tackling internal bias head-on.

We dive into:
🎙️ Why gender equity in tourism matters
🚧 The barriers women face
✈️ And how YOU, as a traveler, can be part of the solution

Just wrapped up 9 unforgettable days exploring Iceland’s Ring Road — all 1,328 kilometers (825 miles) of it… plus a few bonus adventures.

From puffin sightings and whale watching to glacier trekking and chasing more waterfalls than we could count, this trip was packed with epic moments. We ventured off the beaten path into Iceland’s wild, remote corners — the kind of places where it’s just you and nature (and maybe a ginger shot or two… okay, a lot of ginger — you had to be there). 😂

Our group of 16 came from across the US and India, and somehow became fast friends almost instantly — possibly a new record for bonding speed! 💚

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this trip such a special experience. 🥳🙏🏼

There's a lot of talk about who not to support but what about all the businesses doing awesome work!? 🤔 Let's flip the conversation and focus on them! 🥳

When I started this I thought, oh I'll be done in an hour! Wrong! 😱 Two hours later I was still finding places! 🥳 But I really needed to wrap things up, so that means if you know of other hotels doing awesome things in Mexico, tag them in the comments. 🥰

Here are a few others doing some fabulous things in Mexico that you might want to check out too:

🌿 - commitment to biodiversity with its partnership with Parley for the Oceans, an NGO that works to protect the ocean from plastic pollution

🌿 - fully plant-based

🌿Hotels Bf - certified B Corp. with locations throughout Mexico

🌿  - using Door hangers made of sargassum and recycled cardboard (they took a problem and found a use for it)

🌿 - stay includes a donation to Amigos para la Conservación de Cabo Pulmo

🌍Where in the world should I focus on next? Or specific type of tourism (group trips, guides, etc)?✈️🚅

💰 Vote with your dollars! 💰

Putting this together wasn’t easy — I almost didn't. Many companies aren’t exactly transparent about their alliances, and donation dollars don’t always tell the full story (see the screenshot on political donations from cruise companies). So I only focused on ones that were very clear with their priorities (meaning there are plenty of others that are sketch).🤦🏼

When it comes to political giving, some companies donate across the board, while others lean heavily one way or the other. Does an extra $7,000 to Republicans mean they’re fully aligned with the DEI-dismantling, MAGA agenda? Hard to say. But if you want to dig deeper, Open Secrets is a great resource for tracking political donations. If you’ve already booked with a company or are considering it, reach out and ask questions.❓

The next two slides highlight wildlife and animal welfare concerns, thanks to the incredible advocacy work of and . Both organizations provide more details on their websites, including ethical alternatives to book instead. 🦍🦈🦒

⚡ Feeling Overwhelmed? You’re Not Alone.

With so much focus on where not to spend our money, it’s easy to feel exhausted. But if you’ve already booked something non-refundable, don’t stress—there are still ways to make a positive impact elsewhere. The goal isn’t perfection (is that even possible?); it’s about making better choices, trip by trip.

Coming soon: the good news! 🌍✨ There are companies doing the right thing, and they deserve your support. Stay tuned!

💔Yesterday, our veggie travel tribe lost a member of its pack. Although Calvin's work ethic was questionable — he had a habit of dozing off in meetings, barking at all the wrong times, and flat-out walking away when uninterested — he brought immeasurable joy to everyone he met (he was once an unofficial office therapy dog, until he got in trouble!).😂

Over the last 18 years, this fluffy guy gave us countless laughs — from his bizarre but hilarious obsession with licking strangers’ legs (yes, super weird) to Lake Michigan road trips where he transformed into a Swiffer, somehow bringing an entire sand dune into the car. 🤦🏼😱

We hope he’s now trotting through doggie paradise, making new friends, reconnecting with old ones, and indulging in an unlimited supply of treats. 🐕💕💜

Believe it or not, this job comes with a heavy dose of arguing. Some days I think I would've done well on the debate team.

Not long ago, I asked a hotel about their vegan breakfast options. Their answer? Fruit and toast—for $30. I laughed and asked, Would you pay that? They said no. So why do you think it’s okay to serve that to my client just because they don’t eat animal products? Cue the awkward silence.

I get it—change is hard.

While, it would be easier to just work with vegan & vegetarian hotels, the real progress happens when I have these tough (and often frustrating) conversations with mainstream hotels, suppliers, and guides. And you know what gets their attention? $$$. It’s amazing how quickly people start listening when their bottom line is at stake.

That’s why I jumped at the chance to write this opinion piece for Travel Pulse: The Rise of Vegan Travel: What Suppliers & Advisors Must Know.

Will they keep ignoring me? Maybe. Will I keep pushing? Absolutely.
