Today's Instructional Tip of the Week: The TKS System (Ice Protection System)

TKS is short for Tecalemit-Kilfrost-Sheepbridge Stokes, which was the name of a British Aerospace Manufacturer back in the 20th century. During World War 2, the British Military came up with an idea of dealing with the icing conditions while flying sorties over Europe. One scientist thought, "if we can't fly through icing conditions, we'll adapt to it", and that's where the ice protection system comes into play.

Here's how it works:
-The system prevents ice accumulation on the wings, airframe, propeller, and other structures via deicing fluid
-A series of reservoirs hold the deicing fluid
-Fluid Pumps are used to transport the deicing fluids to different parts of the airplane
-Porous surface areas or strips help the airplane provide a coating for the fluid on ALL surface areas

This can help the pilot exit icing conditions quickly if in trouble. While it's primarily used in Commercial aircraft, it's also used in some General Aviation aircraft. The only caveat with this system is that you have a limited amount of fluid to use (1-3 hours), depending upon how much you use it. So, it's important to plan and use it wisely. Remember, it's designed to prevent ice accumulation, not to remove ice accumulation. That's the instructional tip for this week!

Happy Friday Everyone! Today's instructional tip of the week: Preventative Maintenance

What is Preventative Maintenance? It is defined as "simple or minor preservation operations and the replacement of small standard parts not involving complex assembly operations".

Examples of this include:
-Removing or repairing landing gear tires
-Servicing landing gear struts
-Replacing or cleaning spark plugs
-Replenishing hydraulic fluid
-Or other information as found under 14 CFR 43 Appendix A, Part C

However, to do this type of maintenance it must be done on an aircraft you own or operate. This can't be done on rental aircraft. Second, you must be a Private Pilot or higher to do this type of work. A student pilot can't do this type of work. Third, only do it if you are comfortable doing it. If not, talk to a local A&P Mechanic and he/she will show you how to properly do it. New tasks can be daunting at first, but with proper training it will build you more confidence. That's the instructional tip for this week!
