A Travel Agent's dreaded nightmare, when a client sees Costco Travel and weighs booking with an agent or Costco.
Well, Costco will save you a lot of money. In fact, Costco has won my business because the Costco Cash Card they give me is more than any commissions I would have received as an agent. Here's the factors to consider:
*You get what you get. Costco Travel is a one-size-fits-all option.
If there package that fits you, awesome! BUT if you need it customized, you may want to consider an agent.
Here's my experience booking with Costco Travel for both a Disney Cruise and a Universal Studios park experience.
*I am booking a "guaranteed" stateroom.
That means I get assigned a stateroom some 2-6 weeks before the cruise. This means the stateroom is cheaper, but it's luck of the draw on whether our two rooms are booked to be next to each other. Add in the power of Angels, manifesting, and "the universe has got my back" and I'm ok with being lucky! (I can coach you on this if you don't yet know how to access this power.)
*Costco travel advisor's are limited in what they can do
It's helpful if you have someone (like me!) who says "Call Disney and request this, this, and this, for your cruise." Disney doesn't care who's on the phone, but because Costco is giving you back so much of their commissions, they leave it up to you to take care of the details.
For me? I'm calling in to see if I can change to main dining from second seating (I can't, but I can still request it when I check in at the port. Which I won't because I'd rather dine with the friends who are traveling with me and moving all of us would be a monstrous feat.)
*You have to add your own Castaway Club ID to the reservation or log in and link it. But if you know this, you like feeling in control of it! :)
NOW Consider what a travel package looks like with Costco for Universal Studios.
I'm visiting with my family in October. I decided to compare my options against Costco. No go. Costco only has a 4 day package. I need a two-day.
I also know that when you book with an agent, you get early access. So, I call up one of my favorite travel agents.
When I booked the tickets for the rest of my family, I didn't get tickets for me and my daughter. I'd hoped to get a travel agent comp ticket. But I've decided not to be an agent anymore, so that option is gone. If I'd booked it early, the ticket price would have been $1107. The price for tickets for me and my daughter are now $1700. The travel agent then prices out staying at a hotel, which I already know could potentially save me money. Turns out I can have a one night stay, all the benefits I needed to match the other tickets I have, and the price went to $1180. Perfect! ONLY an $80 increase and now I have a place to rest mid-day if I need.
So, If you need tips like this, where I can share all my background knowledge to assist you, my fee is $75 for an hour. The first phone call will be a full hour. Additional hours purchased can be broken up into 20-30 min increments.
