Honoring a Special Community
The free Black community of Brinkley Hill, a key Underground Railroad stop, will be honored Thursday, October 9, with a new state historical marker at Caesar Rodney High School in Camden. Namesake brothers, William and Nathaniel Brinkley, worked with Harriet Tubman and others to help scores of enslaved people to freedom. William Brinkley also was a founder of residents’ first school and Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church, shown here, recognized by a state historical marker and the National Register of Historic Places. The new Brinkley Hill marker – to be unveiled in Thursday’s public event at 11 a.m. – will stand near where the brothers lived.

Join us NEXT WEEK on Wednesday, October 8 at 7:00 PM for a presentation by Jim Fussell.

Many Quakers in history, included John Hunn and Thomas Garrett from Delaware, have strong ties to the abolitionist movement, but anti-slavery sentiment was not always widespread in Quaker communities. Jim Fussell will discuss enslavement and discrimination in Quaker history and explore the many ways that Black individuals asserted their agency and fought against their enslavers.

Image Description: Text dominating the image reads "Black Resistance to Quaker Enslavement w/ Jim Fussell New Castle Court House Museum Wed, October 8 @ 7:00 pm." There is a broken chain graphic breaking up the title and a ripped paper edge breaking up the title and other info.
