Passport processing times are currently up to 13 weeks. Even if you have no international travel on the docket, may I suggest that it's time to get your passport?
My personal tips
1) Take your passport pictures at home and get them printed at Walmart (most wallet-friendly)...The State Department website will tell you if your pic meets the requirements.
2) Take your photos, your completed forms, your ID, etc to a Passport Acceptance Facility. We had a GREAT experience at the Indian Prairie Library in Darien, IL. (If it's you're first time applying, you need to go in person. You might be eligible to renew an existing passport by mail, but read all the requirements.)
3) If your passport is WITHIN ONE YEAR of expiring, then it is time to renew. You do not want to travel with a passport that will be expiring within 6 months of international travel; therefore, get out ahead of that and renew before it's urgent.
4) It's expensive enough to get passports without having to pay for expedited service (which won't alleviate your stress in a rush situation). Passports are good for 10 years (or 9-9½ ish years: see Tip No. 3). There's value in those dollars spent.
5) I had a friend who was offered a week vacation in Paris at the last minute for spring break. She couldn't go because she and her husband didn't have valid passports. True story.
The State Department site is the only website you should be referencing for passport services:
