Chimpanzees - Uganda’s other great primate encounter

While gorilla trekking often steals the spotlight, chimpanzee tracking is another extraordinary wildlife experience in Uganda.

Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives and watching them interact in the forest is endlessly fascinating. They move quickly through the trees, communicate constantly with calls and gestures, and often gather in lively family groups.

Kibale Forest National Park is one of the best places in Africa to see them. The forest is home to one of the largest populations of chimpanzees in the region, along with many other primates including red colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys.

Tracking them through the forest with experienced guides is a completely different experience from gorilla trekking - more active, often more vocal, and wonderfully energetic.

A perfect addition to any Uganda safari. 🩷

Silverback Spotlight

One of the privileges of long-term conservation is that individual gorillas are known, followed, and understood over time.

Recently, Musilikale was named the most handsome silverback in a light-hearted poll. He leads a group of 24 gorillas and one of the most successful families currently monitored. While polls like these are fun, they also serve a quieter purpose they draw attention to individual gorillas and the years of monitoring that make protection possible.

Knowing who these gorillas are, how their families grow, and how leadership changes over time helps conservation teams make informed decisions in the field. It turns conservation from something abstract into something personal, specific, and ongoing.

Understanding Loss in Gorilla Families

Some of the most powerful moments in conservation aren’t easy ones.

Research has shown that when a gorilla infant dies, mothers may carry their babies for days or even weeks. This behaviour speaks to the depth of care within gorilla families and reminds us that their lives are shaped by relationships, not just instinct.

Understanding these moments helps build a fuller picture of gorilla society and reinforces why conservation must be thoughtful, patient, and rooted in respect. It’s not about drawing comparisons, but about acknowledging the complexity of another social world so close to our own.

Gorilla Bonds

Spending time with mountain gorillas changes how you see connection.

What stays with many of our guests isn’t just the encounter itself, but the relationships they witness the way gorillas sit close, reach out, and move through their days as a family.

There’s an ease and attentiveness to these bonds that feels deeply familiar, yet entirely their own.

Long-term research by organisations such as the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund continues to reveal just how central these relationships are to gorilla life. Protecting gorillas means protecting these bonds, and the social structures that have held their families together for generations.

New life in the forest

The forests of Rwanda and Uganda are quietly celebrating. Recent months have brought the birth of several new mountain gorilla infants, a hopeful sign for a species whose future has been shaped by careful conservation and long-term protection.

Each birth matters. Gorilla families grow slowly, bonds are deep, and every new arrival reflects years of committed work by trackers, vets, park authorities, and local communities working together to safeguard these remarkable primates.

For those fortunate enough to trek during this time, sightings can feel especially moving. Watching a newborn nestled close to its mother or glimpsing the gentle curiosity of a growing family group, is a reminder of just how privileged these encounters are.

This is why we do what we do. Thoughtful travel, respectful access, and experiences that contribute directly to conservation on the ground.

The Pull of Gorilla Trekking

There’s nothing quite like it.

Gorilla trekking feels different from any other wildlife experience it’s quiet, humbling, intuitive and unforgettable.

I still remember the first time I stepped into the forest and heard them moving through the trees. It changes you.

They’re gentle, intelligent, and the moment you lock eyes with a silverback everything else fades.

We’ve been creating gorilla safari journeys for longer than most it’s in our DNA. If you’ve ever wondered what makes it so special, it’s this: connection over spectacle.

Looking for something truly life-changing? Gorilla trekking awaits.

If gorilla trekking is on your bucket list, it’s a lot more flexible than people realise. You can fly in just for the trek itself, an incredible experience in its own right, or build it into a longer East Africa journey.

We love spending time at Sambora, which works brilliantly either before or after a trek. It has an easy-going atmosphere, great guiding, and incredible views. It’s also a lovely base for talking through the day’s trek, the gorilla families each have their own personalities, and comparing stories is half the fun.

For travellers wanting more time in the region, pairing Rwanda with Tanzania is a favourite: mountain gorillas and the Serengeti in one trip feels like the best of both worlds.

If you’re thinking about a trip in 2026, permits and key dates tend to go quickly but planning can be simple with the right structure. We are always happy to help and talk through ideas.
