A moose at the creek. Zero neighbors watching.

Teton Valley grooms 70-plus miles of classic and skate trail, open as early as mid-November. Picture Teton Canyon, 8 miles with the peaks in full view. Skis gliding over fresh corduroy. The version of winter at Grand Teton most people never find.

No ferry lines at Jenny Lake. No shuffle for parking. Just squeaking snow and the Grand catching first light.

Stay at Painted Pony in Tetonia, about an hour from the park entrance. Teton sunset views off the back porch.

Day one. Snowshoe Taggart Lake. Glassy, frozen, silent, the whole basin to yourself.

Day two. Hike String Lake, then warm up by the fire back at your basecamp.

Day three. Drift toward the National Elk Refuge—a horse-drawn sleigh ride, thousands of elk, bison, and bald eagles up close.

Carry bear spray even in the cold. Dress for a 35- 40-degree swing. Start early.

Base yourself on the Idaho side. Twenty-five minutes to Grand Targhee powder, warm timber, a hot tub at the end of every day.

Start with the snow.

1. Grand Targhee pulls 500-plus inches of light powder a year, and the lift lines barely exist. Then the quiet.

2. Seventy-plus miles of groomed Nordic trails across Driggs, Victor, and Alta, most of them empty.

3. Trade the crowds for sleigh rides gliding past wild elk at the National Elk Refuge, the runners hushed against the snow.

Jackson is for tourists. Teton Valley is for travelers. Same range, different side. You get the real mountains without the circus.

When your legs are done, warm up at the Royal Wolf in Driggs, the local’s living room. Then back to your basecamp, boots off, hot tub steaming under a cold sky.
