Day 11- Captain’s Choice North Channel Trip
Thursday, August 27
With rain in the forecast for the morning, but a nice afternoon, we stayed at Moiles Harbor for the day. Books, naps, rowing, and hiking were done.
Scott did well in the galley, cooking a delicious lentil rice sausage stew for dinner.
While out for a row, Julie and Capt Hugh spotted a mama bear and her wee cub taking a drink.
Julie tossed her line overboard but no fish took her bait.
We enjoyed a spectacular full moon rise and set our alarms for just before midnight with hopes that the clouds would part to reveal the large lunar eclipse and that the Northern Lights would reign.
Clouds parted and the water was still allowing us to see the eclipse above and reflected below us in the tranquil water.
But we have no pictures of the Northern Lights, because they did not show themselves at midnight, nor at 3 am when Julie had to use the head.

Day 10- Captain’s Choice North Channel Trip

Our North Channel Trip is a way for the deckhands to put all their skills to practice as we start finishing our season. One of the skills they get to work on is cooking full meals in the galley. Prior to our departure they propose to Julie, chief cook and provisioner, one breakfast and two dinners that they want to make. Criteria is that it needs to be able to be made in 60 minutes or less, and for dinner is balanced with protein, carbohydrates, and vegetables that doesn’t use every pot in the galley.
After assisting Julie all summer on board and at home, they now get to experience what it takes to be the cook.
Today was Antonia’s turn to make breakfast as well as dinner. For breakfast, she fed us scrambled eggs, buttery grits and bacon.
After breakfast we departed Eagle Island with a reefed main, fore, and staysail up. Soon we set the jib as the winds weren’t as big as we thought they might be.
About 9:30 Capt Hugh made the securité call to announce that we’d soon be passing through Little Detroit Passage.
Our next destination was Moiles Harbor at John Island, where the Moiles Brothers had moved their mill from DeTour Village to John Island in the 1890s. In the harbor are deadheads, old logs that sunk in the bay and now sometimes rise up from the bottom, create a hazard to navigation and anchoring. To help us avoid them as we sought a location to drop the anchor, Scott put on a climbing harness and went aloft as visibility from the fore spreaders was better than on deck to see the deadheads.
Julie then cooked for lunch the bass she had caught the night before.
Naps and reading took up the rest of the afternoon as scattered showers kept us below decks.
And for dinner Antonia made tuna noodle casserole.

Day 9- Captain’s Choice North Channel Trip
Tuesday, August 25
We didn’t have to rise before the sun, but shortly after. While Antonia started prepping the deck for weighing anchor, Julie got the breakfast casserole and bacon in the oven and Huron Jewel coffee perking. Scott then tended it while Antonia weighed anchor.
We ate breakfast underway and arrived at the Little Current Swing Bridge about 08:50 am ready for the 09:00 opening.
Being the only ones to pass through, the bridge quickly shut behind us. Next stop - Little Current.
Sadly we said goodbye to our friends, Sue, Tim, Kaitlyn, and Brandyn in Little Current. Brandyn who had never been sailing on trip like this said he had one complaint, “It didn’t last long enough.”
Hopefully we’ll see them in the coming year on a leg of our multiyear Dream Inspiration Tour beginning in 2027.
While tied up at the town dock wall, we gave a few dockside tours of the schooner, got a few groceries, and checked out the marine history exhibit and art gallery at Turner’s.
Next stop, head eastward past the Benjamins to Eagle Island for the night. Light winds on our nose meant it was a motorboat trip, but we weren’t going very far. Only about 10 miles.
It’s a beautiful anchorage with lots of room to swing and a few bass, one of which Julie caught (finally) after dinner. She also heard a Great Horned Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, Belted Kingfisher, and Common Loons. She got added to her birding life list hearing a Barred Owl as it flew from spot to spot in the trees on the island.

Day 8- Captain’s Choice North Channel Trip
Monday, August 24
Normally when we weigh anchor in the Pool, we hoist up a muddy chain with about 50 lbs of “weeds” on the anchor; well, at least it feels like it is 50 pounds. Julie informed the deckhands for what was invariably to come and we were prepared with boat hook, hose, and someone on the bowsprit to pull off the water plants. Our pre-planning worked, we didn’t even have enough green stuff to make a side salad for one person, a first in over six years of visiting there.
We motored out Baie Finn enjoying the windswept trees that clung to the granite cliff edges and passed Bald Eagles with watchful eyes.
At the entrance to the lake, cloudy skies and strong winds encouraged Capt Hugh to order a reef to be put in the mainsail.
We enjoyed a great sail across to the southern side of Strawberry Island where we dropped anchor for the night.
Antonia declared the pork loin as rocking and the fresh chives Tim, our friend, had been given joined some sour cream to make excellent mashed potatoes.
Julie didn’t try very long with the fishing as Tuesday morning would be an early anchor up to make the 9:00 am Little Current Swing Bridge opening.

Day 7- Captain’s Choice North Channel Trip
Sunday, August 23
After breakfast we motored to the fuel dock to get our black water tank pumped out; it’s more like sucked out. Red, the dock master, informed us that he had heard there were only a couple of boats in The Pool that morning. Plan A would be to find out if there was room for us, or not. If not we’d at least have been able to enjoy the cruise through Baie Finn. Many people describe it as a fjord, but it isn’t because it was created by an ice sheet not a glacier.
We hoped to raise sail in the Lansdowne Channel but west winds at 20+ knots meant we were head to wind, so we didn’t. The open lake was worse so we continued motoring around to Baie Finn where the water was calm, protected from the mountains.
Scattered showers followed us all day but didn’t dampen our spirits, especially when hot dark chocolate with mini marshmallows was made.
We dropped anchor in The Pool amongst a couple neighbors, including an old catamaran, Red Nib V.
Capt Hugh towed the deckhands ashore so they could explore the woods and Julie cast her lure in hoping to catch some dinner. She only caught two small bluegills, so she made us her irresistible spaghetti and a salad with sourdough bread.

Day 6 - Captain’s Choice North Channel Trip
Saturday, August 22
Killarney - day-off and scattered rain was the forecast.
Capt Hugh and Julie decided that the galley would be closed for breakfast since there were options ashore. Scott enjoyed sleeping in, Hugh, Julie, and Antonia went out for breakfast and pastries and found a Book Fridge.
Julie and Antonia each did laundry which involved waiting a long time in line for the single washer and dryer.
We visited the two art galleries, one of which is by , one of Julie’s favorite living artists. Gillian makes incredible art from mixed media, paint, fabric, and thread.
Scott took a couple of hikes; folks enjoyed the sauna; and we had fish and chips at Herbert’s. Unfortunately they no longer serve from the Bus
Julie spent the afternoon baking up a storm of cherry almond pound cake, and an orange pecan with cream cheese star pastry for Sunday’s breakfast.
Julie filled the dinner bowls with coconut curry chicken with sourdough bread.
Safely tied up at the marina we slept through the torrential rain that night.

Day 5 - Captain’s Choice North Channel Trip
Friday, August 21
Last night, the clear sky and calm water allowed the stars to reflect on the polished surface, making the stars look like they were gently bouncing.
Before breakfast Julie punched down the dough, which rose well overnight, for its second rise as the Dutch oven preheated in the oven; dough then went in the oven after breakfast. All agreed it was amazing!
We enjoyed a tranquil motor out to the western half of Collins Inlet to the Georgian Bay, where we raised sail.
A steady 12 kt wind gave us a great sail past Killarney Channel, to the western end of Lansdowne Channel, there we tacked and sailed Lansdowne Channel to Killarney Bay. There we struck sail and motored the Sportsmann Inn, where we had reservations for two nights. We planned to stay tied up at the marina due to some severe thunderstorms through Sunday morning.
Once we tied up, Brady, the marina manager, greeted us with “You are welcome to stay here, but there is a slip waiting for you at the Killarney Mountain Lodge,” which is their other property and marina. The Sportsmann Inn would be noisy from 8 pm - 2 am with the Killarney Music Festival and they wanted to make sure we would have a restful two nights.
We decided to take them up on their offer and cast off to move a quarter-mile down the channel where Red and Ava caught our dock lines.
That afternoon, we enjoyed stretching our legs on shore, Julie and Antonia got some provisions from the General Store.
And, as with many places we go, we gave free dockside tours telling folks that we made our dream happen by building Schooner Huron Jewel, and if we can build this you can make your own dream happen!

Day 4 - Captain’s Choice North Channel Trip
Thursday, August 20
Light winds meant no hoisting the sail, but we had fun with an onboard scavenger hunt as we motored from Bad River to Collins Inlet, part of the route that voyagers used “back in the day.”
Beaver lodges, a mink bounding on boulders.
We dropped anchor mid-afternoon in Mill Lake, about halfway down Collins Inlet and the deckhands enjoyed swimming ashore and checking out the cool rocks and plants.
Julie taught Branden and Kaitlyn how to make sourdough bread, which was put to a slow long rise overnight.
Everyone polished off the dinner of orange-mustard ham steak with ugly roasted potatoes and salad.

Day 3 - Captain’s Choice North Channel Trip
Wednesday, August 19
This morning the face in the rock was easily seen. After breakfast of veggie egg scrabble with cinnamon raisin English muffins we motored towards the Georgian Bay heading to Bad River. This meant cruising past the town of Killarney.
We saluted the youth sail training crew aboard the brigatine, Playfair, that was tied up at the dock.
Once in the Georgian Bay we raised sail by the cruise ship Octanis,
Scott repositioned our Canadian courtesy flag to free up a gantline that Capt might want to use to fly the spinnaker.
We had a lovely sail to the northeast corner at Bad River.
After dinner, dark clouds threatened us with rain. The drizzle quick passed and we had fun with the double rainbow!
