For IMMEDIATE RELEASE

From August 1 to September 20, Voices Studios, 1585 Central Avenue, Dubuque, will feature a series of exhibits and programs entitled, “ Expressions of the Soul: Art, Voice, and Vision.” The anchor exhibit includes the works of artist, author, and educator Steve Parlato. Parlato, who lives in Connecticut, is an award-winning poet and college professor as well as the author of two young adult books. His poetry has also appeared in several journals. Parlato’s exhibit in Dubuque will feature a 16-piece portrait collage series titled, “They Are Not Disposable," which will honor 16 black Americans whose lives were stolen due to racial violence. Parlato uses his poetry and artwork to promote conversations about racism, with the goal of fostering connection and opening minds. His exhibit is more than visual art ---each piece is a heartfelt tribute, a call to justice and a story waiting to be witnessed. Parlato’s artwork shares an uncanny connection to Dubuque’s early history. In 1840, Nathaniel Morgan, an early black settler, was murdered by an angry white mob.

Parlato will discuss his creative process and the methods he uses to craft his work as well as answer questions and share his poetry at a special presentation at 7 p.m., Friday, August 1, at Voices Studios. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

During Parlato’s exhibit, Voices Studios will also host four black visual artists: Rhonda Bees, photography, paintings and quilts; Marley Washington, clothing designer and multimedia paintings; Will Pearsall, paintings; and Madison Rhymes, Digital Installation.

Other events at Voices Studios in August and September include:

Saturday, August 9, 7 PM: film "The Negro Artist" by Nik Heftman and spoken word by Caleb Rainey.

Friday, September 5, 8 PM: Hip-hop showcase curated by Matt Gregory featuring local artists.

Saturday, September 6, 6 PM: Nathaniel Morgan Memorial Event

Thursday, September 1, 6 PM: A panel presentation titled, “We Create Anyway: Black Art and Enterprise in an Age of Opposition.” Moderators are Alanda Gregory and Ernest Jackson.

Friday, September 12, 7 PM: African Vibes, by Sarah Ndagire.
Wednesday, September 17, 6:30 PM: A film trailer for "Black Life on the Upper Mississippi River" by Dale Campbell, Jr. will be shown.
Thursday, September 18, 5:30 PM: Music by William Wilkerson
Thursday, September 18, 6:30 PM: There will be a presentation titled, “History and Culture of Black Fashion” by Peggy Jackson with spoken word by Christina Baker.

This exhibit was made possible by City of Dubuque Special Projects Grant. With the help of our wonderful sponsors: The Catholic congregations of women religious of Dubuque, which include the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM), the Dubuque Presentation Sisters, and the Dubuque Franciscan Sisters.
