Some travelers are up early in the morning, seeing all they can. Others take each day as it comes. There’s no one right way to travel, and knowing your pace makes all the difference.

For my family, we take our travels slow and immersive. We take time in one place, one activity a day, and plenty of time to wander.

If you’re planning to go on your dream trip soon, send us a message, and we’ll help you plan it at the pace that feels right for you.

I drove the length of New Zealand with my family, sandboarding these dunes was a highlight.

Here’s the thing about Cape Reinga: getting there isn’t easy, but that is where the fun lies. The road to the northernmost tip of New Zealand runs along Ninety Mile Beach (which is not 90 miles long), you’re driving on sand with the Tasman Sea out your window to the left. Then you turn right and drive down a flowing riverbed until you reach these giant dunes to go sandboarding before continuing on to the Cape.

You will lie flat on a board, fly down a wall of sand, then turn around and climb all the way back up to do it again. And again. And again.

The journey is as much fun as the destination.

It’s a little off the beaten path, but so worth the effort.

Near the northern tip of New Zealand's North Island, this is where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet. Standing at the lighthouse lookout you can see the waves swirl together, it’s something you won’t forget.

We booked a full-day coaster bus tour, and it was a fun journey along ninety-mile beach. We had some beach stops, running in the sand, writing messages along the shore, and a whole day of adventure.

Cape Reinga is also deeply meaningful in Māori culture. Known as Te Rerenga Wairua, it's where spirits are said to depart through the roots of an ancient pōhutukawa tree on their journey home to Hawaiki. It's a sacred site, which makes it a beautiful chance to pause and share the story with your family.

Fun, active, and full of meaning, worth a spot on your New Zealand list.

Save this for your future trip and reach out when you're ready to start planning.

The world's smallest penguin is about the size of a loaf of bread.

Every evening in Ōamaru, kororā come ashore in groups called rafts. They cross open ground, scramble up the rocks past the fur seals, and climb all the way to their nesting boxes to go to bed for the night. You watch from the stands in the dark. No talking, no flash. It’s an experience to remember.

We adopted one while we were there, we named him Big Fuzz.

I recommend booking the premium seats, arrive early, and plan on self-driving, it's roughly 3 hours south of Christchurch.

New Zealand has a several spots to see penguins. Oamaru is one of our favorites.

Sedona is a beautiful artsy community surrounded by these enormous red rock formations. Galleries and little shops in town, and great hiking around every corner, which we love.

Be careful on the trails because they are easy to lose on the rocks. Once you're up on the bare rock there's no dirt path to follow, just little stacks of stones to watch for. We had to backtrack a few times.

And the way down is so much quicker than the way up. You spend all morning climbing and then you're back in the car before you know it.

Worth every step for those views.

I cannot wait for my pretzel. That is genuinely the first thing I think about when Oktoberfest comes around.

Berthoud Oktoberfest is Saturday, October 3rd. They tap the keg at 11 and there's music and dancing going until 6. The Denver Kickers Schuhplattlers are on twice, and they do the Bavarian folk dance which is worth catching. The Slapstep Cloggers dance twice too, and the Twirling Zucchinis and the Rocky Mountain Dutch Boys are playing. A few contests will be happening through the afternoon as well.

Free to get in, 11 to 6 at Town Park.

We'll have our Sprout & Goose Travel booth there too, so come drop by and say hi.

Hobbiton is a charming stop for mega fans and novices of the Lord of the Rings Franchise alike.

It doesn't look like a movie set. It looks like you are wandering through a real life magical world;, the little round doors, the gardens, smoke drifting out of the chimneys.

The set sits on the Alexander family's working sheep farm outside Matamata. To visit you gather about 15 minutes away, and take a bus to the site. Nobody walks around Hobbiton unattended.

There are about half a dozen tour options; the standard one, a private tour, a lunch combo, a behind-the-scenes, a breakfast tour, and an evening banquet. If you can swing it, do one with a meal. We had dinner inside the Green Dragon Inn and that was a trip highlight.

Thinking about New Zealand? This is one stop you don't want to miss.

I get asked a lot whether New Zealand is worth it with kids. It's a long flight.

And the answer is YES. It is 100% worth the journey. New Zealand feels as if it was created to inspire kids imagination. It's a hands-on destination and an outdoors destination. Jut some of the experiences they will remember forever...

Waitomo glowworm caves, Hot Water Beach, the little blue penguins at dusk, hiking a Glacier, seeing whales and dolphins from a boat, and Hobbiton.
