🇮🇸 IT TOOK 41 YEARS TO BUILD… AND YOU CAN GO ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP! 😮
When Mo and I visited Reykjavík in 2022, there was no missing Hallgrímskirkja. At 244 feet tall, this striking church dominates the Reykjavík skyline—and the view from its tower is absolutely worth the trip up. ❤️
A few fun facts:
⛪ Hallgrímskirkja means “Church of Hallgrímur,” named for Hallgrímur Pétursson, one of Iceland’s best-known poets and clergymen.
🌋 Its unusual design was inspired by Iceland itself. Architect Guðjón Samúelsson drew inspiration from the basalt columns, mountains and lava formations found around the country.
🏗️ Construction began in 1945 and wasn’t completed until 1986—more than four decades later!
📏 At about 74.5 meters (244 feet), it is Iceland’s largest church and one of Reykjavík’s most recognizable landmarks.
🎹 Inside is a massive Klais pipe organ with more than 5,000 pipes. It weighs roughly 25 tons!
👀 Don & Mo Travel Tip: Go up the tower. The panoramic view across Reykjavík, the harbor, mountains and colorful rooftops is one of the best in the city.
