Uncle Sam, the iconic personification of the United States, originated from a real person named Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from Troy, New York. The soldiers, however, jokingly referred to the meat as "Uncle Sam's," and this nickname eventually stuck, evolving into the symbol of the United States.
