Feel free to copy and paste. We need this shut down or moved to a more sustainable fisheries if we want to fish for the remainder of the season. Dear Skagit Charity Classic
I am writing to politely ask you to reconsider running your charity event on a fisheries that does not have such a small quota. In 2021 marine area 7 was closed down 7 days after the opener caused by exceeding the quota through holiday pressure. To reduce the pressure, the state has given us three days that are not scheduled near a holiday. By adding a derby you will increase pressure and you have the potential to shut down the entire area for the remainder of the summer if it is believed that the anglers caught and captured more fish than the quota allows. We currently have the potential to fish for salmon species other than chinook for the entire month of August as well as September, something that hasn't happened in several years.
However, this derby has the potential to single handedly take that opportunity away if to much pressure is concentrated on the chinook season.
Your opening statement says "fishing to benefit the community". The economic benefit anglers bring Washingtons economy generates $1.1 billion annually but if the largest geographical marine Area in the state is shut down for two additional months due to a derby that will generate a few thousand for one cause, one could argue that you don't really have the community in mind. The community will not benefit if the fisheries is shut down. I ask that you please put the community first and if you absolutely have to run a derby to generate revenue for a single cause, do it on a fisheries that isn't already pressured
