Historical Edenton Town Common inspires the New Edenton Commons
Edenton Town Common has been the heart of the community since colonial days. Originally a sprawling green venue on the town’s edge, it evolved into a vibrant communal space:
- Public gatherings & recreation – Beginning as a place for town-wide events, it later hosted horse races and fairs.
- Educational landmarks – Key community structures rose here:
- A Boy Scout cabin (1929) that became a symbol of youth and civic pride.
- A WPA‑funded National Guard Armory (1936) and Hicks Field baseball park (1939), fostering unity.
- John A. Holmes High School (1952), built to serve both rural and town students, added an educational legacy.
Symbol of progress – Through the Great Depression, World Wars, segregation, and early civil rights gains, the Common mirrored Edenton’s journey toward inclusivity and modern civic life.
In contrast, the newly reimagined Edenton Commons at 213 S Broad St represents a modern extension of Edenton’s community spirit through adaptive reuse and revitalization:
- Historic setting, fresh purpose – Located in the heart of downtown Edenton, this vibrant community hub is designed to bring together local entrepreneurs, creatives, nonprofits, and neighbors.
- Shared space, shared values – With collaborative workspaces, event programming, and room for innovation, it honors the spirit of public gathering once found in the original Town Common.
- Rooted in community – Whether you're hosting a workshop, seeking a coworking spot, or starting a local project, Edenton Commons is where community connection meets modern creativity.
