🌉✨ Did you know it once cost just FIVE CENTS to walk across the Goethals Bridge from Elizabeth?

Opened in 1928, the original Goethals Bridge connected Elizabeth, New Jersey, with Staten Island and was named for Major General George Washington Goethals—the engineer who supervised the completion of the Panama Canal.

For nearly 90 years, the bridge helped keep our region moving. But as traffic grew to more than 90,000 vehicles a day, engineers faced an extraordinary challenge: replace an entire bridge without disrupting one of the region’s most important connections.

The solution was remarkable. A new $1.5 billion Goethals Bridge was constructed alongside the original, and in 2017, traffic transitioned to the new crossing.

Then came an incredible piece of engineering: a massive 350-foot section of the old bridge was lowered 135 feet onto barges in the Arthur Kill and carried away.

Today, the new Goethals features six traffic lanes plus a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists.

And that five-cent walk across the bridge? Today, walking is free. 🚶‍♂️🚲

Nearly a century later, the Goethals continues connecting Elizabeth with New York—and keeping our region moving.

✨ Because in Elizabeth, even the bridges have a story.

🚂💫 Did you know one of New Jersey’s most legendary trains was connected to Elizabeth’s railroad story?

Launched in 1929, the Blue Comet became famous for combining speed, style, and comfort as it carried passengers between the New York area and the Jersey Shore, including Atlantic City.

Its striking blue design represented the sky and ocean, its passenger cars were named after comets, and its service offered travelers a taste of luxury without the luxury fare.

But Elizabeth has its own connection to this golden age of rail travel. Elizabethport was an important part of the Central Railroad of New Jersey network, with railroad facilities that helped support the movement of trains across the region.

Today, you can discover the Blue Comet and explore more of Elizabeth’s transportation history at the Elizabeth Welcome Station.
