Did you know that Texas Parks and Wildlife does more than operate state parks?

Many people don't realize that TPWD also operates five freshwater fish hatcheries that play a critical role in conserving and enhancing Texas fisheries. These hatcheries raise millions of fish each year that are stocked in Texas lakes, rivers, and reservoirs, helping create healthy fish populations and great fishing opportunities for anglers across the state.

One of those hatcheries is the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center - Texas Parks and Wildlife in Athens, and it has quickly become one of our favorite East Texas weekend destinations!

Admission is just $5.50 for adults, $4.50 for seniors (65+), and $3.50 for children ages 4–12, and there is so much included. They have a small museum about freshwater fishing, several large aquarium tanks, a tram ride around the grounds, and even a gator exhibit.
Our favorite part is the catch and release of course. Included in your entry is the rods, reels, and bait- and it's all set up for you! There's no fussing with knots or untangling line.

We honestly lost count of how many fish we caught! It's the perfect place to introduce kids to fishing, spend a couple of hours outdoors, or simply enjoy a fun and affordable day in East Texas.

If you're looking for a family-friendly adventure that's educational, budget-friendly, and full of fish, the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center definitely deserves a spot on your East Texas bucket list! 🎣🐟

🇺🇸 Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸

Today, we're celebrating 250 years of America's story—a story written across soaring mountains, quiet forests, winding rivers, rugged deserts, peaceful lakes, and the small towns that make this country feel like home.

One of our favorite parts of traveling has been discovering just how beautiful and diverse America truly is. From breathtaking state parks to charming Main Streets, every place has its own story, its own people, and its own reason to stop and stay awhile.

Every mile reminds us that there's still so much left to explore, and every adventure leaves us even more inspired to experience the incredible places this country has to offer.

Here's to 250 years of freedom, adventure, and the landscapes and communities that make America so special. We can't wait to keep exploring—and we hope you'll come along for the journey.

We visited Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park in June, and had a great time taking in all of the beauty.

The first thing we noticed was the vibrant life abundant in the park. All of the trees and foliage were bright shades of green. Even though we missed peak season, there were still many birds to be seen. It was a beautiful way to spend the day in nature.

However, what made this park truly special were the incredible park volunteers. From our friendly tram driver to the sweet volunteer in the nature center, they made us feel genuinely welcomed. Their passion for the park and the wildlife was contagious, and they truly embody the heart and soul of what Texas State Parks is all about. 🩷

Last weekend, Sail 250 brought the Spanish Navy Training Tall Ship Juan Sebastian de Elcano to Galveston, and they were giving free tours to the public. Of course, we had to go it see it.
The ship was beautiful and the crew was so friendly. I loved seeing the pride they have in their work and in their country. I'm really glad that we had the opportunity to experience this!

Summer is already in full swing and we know what that means- The sun is shining bright and the days get hot.

Another one of our favorite parks to cool off is South Llano River State Park. With several river access points, it's easy to bring a tube and float the river, as many times as you'd like!

Continuing our “Meet Us Mondays,” now it’s my turn 🤍

I’m Caitlin- a beach girl at heart. 🌴🥥 Give me the sound of the waves, a warm breeze, and a good sunset, and I’m completely content. That said, I do love a good camping trip… as long as it’s comfortable. I’m all for the tent, the fresh air, and the experience—but I’m definitely not sleeping straight on the ground

While he’s out finding the next trail, I’m usually on the hunt for the best local spots—unique stops, refreshing drinks, and especially good food. One of my favorite parts of traveling is getting a taste of each place we visit (literally).

I’m a proud Texas girl through and through, and if there are Blue Bonnets anywhere nearby, you can bet I’m stopping for them. And no matter where we are, I’ll never pass up a chance to slow down and take in a really beautiful sunset.

I love the mix we bring to our travels—his adventure and my comfort, his mountains and my beach—and somehow it always comes together just right.

We've gotten a lot of questions about how to get to Devil's River State Natural Area.

On our trip, we chose to visit the Dan Allen Hughes Unit. When booking your trip, ensure which unit you are reserving- they are about an hour and half apart.

When getting to the Dan Allen Hughes Unit, there is about 8 miles of gravel road to get the park headquarters. Once at headquarters, it's either 2 miles of more gravel road to the campsites or 7 miles to the day use area on the river. Thankfully, the steepest sections are paved.
Yes, it is quite a trek to the river bottom, but the reward of Crystal clear water makes it all worth it!

Devil's River in West Texas provides the most pristine water in the state. The state natural area is one of the hardest to reach, keeping the river and surrounding land wild. It's a beautiful reward for those who dare to make the trek.
