Cruise ship passengers and other tourists heading to Mexico are being warned about a new nationwide ban on electronic ci******es and va**ng devices that could result in steep fines.

The ban, which took effect Jan. 17, prohibits the import, sale and marketing of vapes and e-ci******es across the country, including cruise ports in Costa Maya and Cozumel.

Authorities have stepped up enforcement at ports and airports, putting visitors at risk if they bring the devices ashore — even for personal use.

Penalties can include confiscation of the devices and fines up to $12,500. In severe cases, violations are punishable by up to eight years in prison. The measure builds on earlier restrictions, but the latest enforcement targets imports more aggressively amid concerns over public health and youth usage.

Cruise lines such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean have updated their guest advisories, urging passengers to comply or risk legal trouble.

One cruiser, who spoke on condition of anonymity after a recent stop in Cozumel, told AP (Associated Press) that customs agents scanned bags thoroughly and seized vapes from several people in his group. "It was a hassle, but luckily no fines this time," he said. "Next trip, I'm not chancing it."

The ban comes as Mexico prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with millions of international visitors expected.
