Haul Out and Winch Safety, Recently when hauling out a boat I had to encourage a crew member to stand out of the way of a winch line,thank goodness she listened. Once the boat was on land, the winch cable snapped. Had my friend not stepped a side she would have lost her life. Please carefully inspect all winch lines before using. All winch cables oxidize and rust. Winch cables should be inspected and rinsed when onshore. As a matter of habit I always apply a white grease (e.g. Lubriplate) to my winch line, this helps mitigate oxidation. Once your boat is on land, please TIE-DOWN bowlines to your trailer using the fore and aft cleats. Then release the tension from your winch line.
