At Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center on Saturday the 26th at 2:30 pm in our theater.

Mary TallMountain (1918 - 1994) was only six years old when she was adopted out of her village. Writing and a strong grounding in her Native culture helped her endure many traumas until she was finally able to come home to Nulato 50 years later. Hearing Mary’s story will help people recognize the healing power of their own stories.

Script by Anne Hanley based on the writings of Mary TallMountain, produced by Sharon McConnell, and directed by Allan Hayton.

Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center is OPEN, but the exhibit floors are getting a glow up!

Since opening in 2008, nearly 2 million visitors have traveled across the exhibit hall carpet at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center. To ensure the space remains well-maintained and welcoming, we will be closing our exhibit area from March 31 through April 14, 2025 to replace the carpeting.

During this time Explore Fairbanks, Alaska Public Lands Information Center, Denakkanaaga, and the Alaska Geographic gift shop will be open for their regular hours. We appreciate your patience as we make these necessary updates and look forward to welcoming you back to a refreshed exhibit space mid-April.

The new carpet is in the building and we will be providing updates over the next two weeks. Stop by once it is in and enjoy that plush feeling of new commercial carpet under your feet.

It's time for the University of Alaska Day of Giving, and here at MTCVC we would like to ask you to consider supporting our collaborators with University of Alaska Museum of the North. If you are moved now follow this link:

https://bit.ly/givingdayuamn

BUT THERE'S A CHANCE TO MAKE YOUR GIFT HELP UAMN LEVEL UP!

When 15 people donate to the Museum Annual Fund, MAC will unlock a gift of $15,500 in support of the museum's world-class collections and the hard-working people behind these collections. If you would like to help unlock this gift challenge, you will need to go one more step (but UAMN is worth it!) and call the UA Foundation Giving Day hotline: 907-891-8162 before Giving Day ends at 1 pm on Thursday. A gift of any size and a phone call from 15 people can level up what UAMN receives through Giving Day. Which is wonderful and a great support to a great resource for our community, our state, our nation and the world.

Today in Alaska we recognize Elizabeth Peratrovich, Raven of the Tlingit Lukaax.ádi clan, an Alaskan civil rights leader whose courage and advocacy led to the Alaska Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945—the first civil rights law in the U.S. Her powerful words before the territorial legislature still inspire us today:

“Do your laws against larceny and even murder prevent those crimes? No law will eliminate crime, but at least you, as legislators, can assert to the world that you recognize the evil of this present situation and speak your intent to help us overcome discrimination.” – Elizabeth Peratrovich

Her fight for equality reminds us that justice is not given—it must be demanded. Let’s honor her legacy by continuing to stand up for fairness and inclusion.

Our Story

This is A Place for Gathering, Discovery, Education, and Celebration!

Since 1998 three separate organizations in Interior Alaska dreamed of a beautiful space in which they could easily meet the needs of those they served. Explore Fairbanks and the Alaska Public Lands Information Center (APLIC) talked of sharing a new facility that would inspire residents and visitors to get out and explore Interior and Arctic Alaska. At the same time, Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC)dreamed of having a cultural center to preserve Athabascan languages, carry-on traditional knowledge through Elder teachings, and instill confidence and pride in Alaska Native youth. It was Alaska’s Congressional delegation, led by Senator Ted Stevens, who suggested these three entities work together to plan and build a joint facility.

To some, it was an unlikely partnership. But leaders from each partner agency rolled up their sleeves and immersed themselves in the business of building, planning and raising funds for construction. Now that we’ve opened, facility operation and maintenance costs are shared. The vision of working together remains strong.

The sum of this partnership is truly greater than its individual parts. The synergy of working together has created a world class visitor center at a price none could afford on their own. Partner activities and programs complement each other in a way that allows each distinct organization to better fulfill its individual mission.
