The oath taken by Merchant Mariners is a serious commitment that many civilians don’t fully appreciate.

The Merchant Mariner’s oath reflects a real obligation to the nation — not just a career choice. A few key things people should understand:

The Oath & Commitment

• Merchant Mariners swear an oath of allegiance to the United States and the Constitution
• They acknowledge they can be called into national service during war or national emergency
• This isn’t symbolic — it carries legal and military weight

Historical Proof of That Commitment

• In WWII, Merchant Mariners faced German U-boats, kamikazes, and enemy aircraft
• They suffered casualty rates higher than any branch of the U.S. military during that war
• Ships were sunk with full crews — no weapons to defend themselves, just doing their duty

Still Relevant Today

• The Ready Reserve Fleet exists precisely because the nation may need to move massive amounts of military cargo rapidly
• Mariners understand that call could come at any time
• Modern conflicts still depend heavily on sealift capacity

Often Overlooked

• Most Americans have no idea this obligation exists
• Merchant Mariners aren’t celebrated the way soldiers or sailors are, yet they carry the same fundamental commitment to national defense

It’s a brotherhood (and sisterhood) that takes the oath seriously even when the public doesn’t know it exists.

Yesterday, 5/30 was a beautiful sunny day for our Afternoon Narrated Lock Cruise. 😎
Everyone enjoyed a three hour cruise aboard Colonial Belle narrated by our Captain, drinks from the CB bar, lock passage up & down 25’ in lock E32, & a fun afternoon enjoying the Erie Canal with families & friends.

We also helped Christine celebrate her 60th surprise Birthday Party with a large group of her friends and family on board too! 🎉

Sending healing wishes to our friend John Kucko Digital.

He is an incredible supporter of Colonial Belle, the NYS Canals & SO many other local places, businesses & people.

Please send healing wishes, thoughts, prayers, etc his way!

This is the hardest post I’ve ever written. Tuesday in the early morning—just as I had captured one of the most beautiful rainbows I’ve ever seen at Letchworth State Park (pictured)—I left home for the Rochester area. And in the blink of an eye, my life changed. In Henrietta, on 390 North, I had a seizure and had a bad accident. Thank God nobody was injured and thank God the law enforcement were ok and retrieved me from my car. I am thankful for the EMS to load me up and get me to the hospital. Long story short, I’ve got a brain tumor of some sort—need a surgery fairly soon, but not before our youngest daughter Caroline is wedding Saturday with her high school sweetheart Max. Needless to say, I will be scaling back my page indefinitely as I attend to pressing needs—I’ve got the absolute greatest working the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital. I will not drive for a year at least—thankfully got thousands of videos and images to spread out. Tuesday was the very first in six years that I never posted my “60 Seconds of Serenity” offering since COVID arrived six years ago. I am receiving any and all prayers and goodwills in the coming weeks. I’ve been the blessed ever and have a wonderful family behind me. I’m determined to challenge this as much as I can. And thank you for all of me for continued support! ❤️

Thinking about submitting a nomination for the 2026 NYS Tourism Excellence Awards, but not sure if you're eligible? The nomination process is open to all professionals and organizations contributing to the industry in New York State:

Does my nominated project/person have to be a member of NYSTIA?
👉 No. Nominated projects, programs, campaigns, organizations and individuals must be connected to the advancement of the tourism industry in New York State, but are not required to be members of NYSTIA.

Do I have to be a a member of NYSTIA to submit a nomination?
👉 The Awards are open to the entire tourism industry of New York State. You need not be a member of NYSTIA to nominate or be nominated.

Can I self-nominate?
👉 You are welcome to self-nominate in all categories except for the two individual leadership categories and the New Yorker Award.

Can I prepare my nomination in advance?
👉 Yes! Download our free fillable pdf preparation document and complete your nomination on your own time. Once you're ready, simply copy and past your text into the portal.

Can projects/programs be submitted for more than one category?
👉 Yes! But, a new submission form in each selected category is required.
