🌲👻 The Ghostly Nun of Convento dos Capuchos 🇵🇹

Hidden deep in the misty forests of Sintra, there’s a convent where the walls are covered in cork, the doorways are tiny, and silence seems to follow you from room to room.

Welcome to Convento dos Capuchos, one of Portugal’s most unusual historic retreats.

Founded in 1560, this humble Franciscan convent was built for monks who chose a life of extreme simplicity, far removed from the comforts of the outside world. Their tiny cells, carved into the rocky landscape and lined with cork, offered little protection from the damp mountain air.

But one story stands out.

According to local tradition, Friar Honório spent the final thirty years of his life in solitude in a small grotto within the convent grounds, surviving on bread and water after succumbing to temptation.

Today, the convent’s narrow passages, shadowy chapels, and secluded grotto still carry the atmosphere of a place shaped by centuries of silence and devotion.

There’s no confirmed ghost story attached to the site, but wander through its moss-covered stones on a misty day and you may understand why places like this inspire tales of spirits and secrets.

In the mountains of Spain’s Basque Country, there’s a legend that when the clouds gather around a particular summit, someone extraordinary has come home.

Her name is Mari, one of the most powerful figures in Basque mythology, a goddess associated with Mother Earth and the forces of nature.

Her home? Mount Anboto, a dramatic peak surrounded by rugged cliffs, deep forests, and shifting mountain mist.

According to legend, Mari lives in a cave high on the mountain. On sunny days, she may appear as a beautiful woman combing her long hair with a golden comb. When thick clouds gather around the summit, locals say she has returned to her dwelling.

But Mari is more than a mysterious mountain spirit. She represents the power of nature itself, commanding storms, winds, and rain. In traditional stories, the weather and the fortunes of the land could depend on her.

Madeira is known for its dramatic cliffs, beautiful coastline, and deep blue Atlantic waters. But local folklore tells of something far more mysterious lurking along its shores…

The legend of Barquinha Feiticeira, or the Little Witch’s Boat, tells of an extraordinarily beautiful woman who sailed alone in a small boat, captivating fishermen with her enchanting voice.

Drawn in by her hauntingly beautiful singing, some fishermen followed her out to sea.

And they were never seen again.

Who was she? Some believed she was a sorceress, using her beauty and song to lure unsuspecting sailors away. Others whispered that she was a mermaid, calling to them from the waves.

Whatever the truth, her story became part of Madeira’s rich tradition of local legends, passed down through generations.

Today, the Atlantic still crashes against Madeira’s rugged coastline, and the sea remains as beautiful—and unpredictable—as ever.

So if you find yourself near Calheta as the sun begins to set, keep an eye on the water.

🔮 The Salamanca Cave 🇪🇸

Beneath the golden streets of Salamanca lies a legend involving the Devil, forbidden knowledge, and a student who supposedly lost his shadow.

According to legend, the Cueva de Salamanca was once a hidden underground school where the Devil himself taught seven students the dark arts.

For seven years, they studied necromancy, magic, and forbidden knowledge.

But there was a price.

At the end of their studies, one student had to remain behind as payment to the Devil.

Legend says one of the students, the Marquis of Villena, managed to escape—but not entirely.

He supposedly left the cave without his shadow.

The mysterious underground passage was said to lie beneath the former Church of San Cebrián. Although the legendary entrance has never been found, the site associated with the story can still be visited today.

Walk through Salamanca after dark, when the ancient stone buildings glow beneath the streetlights, and it's easy to imagine a secret world existing just beneath your feet.

Because in Salamanca, not every lesson was meant to be learned. 🔮🌙

🌙 The Enchanted Waters of Pego das Pias 🇵🇹

Deep in the Alentejo, along the Torgal Stream near Odemira, there is a place where the landscape is beautiful, the water is clear, and an old Portuguese legend tells a much darker story.

According to local tradition, a farmer once promised a saint a pair of oxen and a golden harrow if his daughter was healed from an illness.

She recovered.

But the farmer never kept his promise.

One day, while his daughter was drinking from the stream at Pego das Pias, something strange happened.

She disappeared.

Legend says she had been enchanted by the waters and could only be released on Saint John's Night by someone brave enough to take hold of the oxen and the golden harrow.

And so, somewhere among the rocks and rushing water, the enchanted girl is said to remain—waiting for someone to break the spell. 🌙

Today, Pego das Pias is part of the wild landscape of the Odemira region, surrounded by the natural beauty of southwestern Portugal.

Beautiful?

Absolutely.

👻 The Ghosts of Belchite 🇪🇸

There is a village in Spain where the past was never completely left behind.

In Belchite, the ruins of the old town still stand exactly where they were left after the Spanish Civil War. Instead of rebuilding on top of them, a new Belchite was built beside the ruins, leaving the old streets, churches and homes frozen in time.

And over the years, the ruins developed their own collection of ghost stories.

Visitors have reported hearing voices, cries, explosions and even church bells echoing through the abandoned streets. One of the most famous legends involves mysterious recordings of children's voices near the ruins of the Church of San Martín.

Are they ghosts? There is no proof.

But walk through Belchite after dark, with its crumbling walls silhouetted against the night sky, and it's easy to understand why the stories have endured.

This isn't a place where history has simply been preserved.

It's a place where history still feels present. 🌙

😈🌉 The Devil’s Bridge of Amarante

Beautiful river views. A medieval town. And a bridge with a story involving the Devil himself.

According to legend, São Gonçalo of Amarante wanted to build a bridge across the Tâmega River to help the people of Amarante cross safely.

But the Devil had other plans.

The two are said to have entered into a rivalry, with the Devil building his own bridge nearby — supposedly even more impressive than São Gonçalo’s.

There was just one problem.

The Devil was rather proud of his work.

São Gonçalo visited the bridge and noticed that something wasn't quite right. With a simple sign of the cross, legend says he caused the Devil’s bridge to collapse.

The Devil, furious, fled toward the mountains, hurling enormous rocks behind him.

Some say the landscape around the nearby Aliviada Bridge was shaped by those very stones — and that the area was once considered a place where the supernatural lingered.

Today, Amarante's elegant bridge stands peacefully over the Tâmega, surrounded by one of northern Portugal's most beautiful landscapes.

But next time you cross it…

🚇👻 The Ghost Train of Madrid

Madrid has plenty happening above ground. But beneath its streets, there’s a different side to the city — one involving abandoned stations, dark tunnels, and a few stories that are best heard after sunset.

One of Madrid's strangest urban legends is said to live on Line 5.

The story goes that if you're standing on the platform and let train after train pass without getting on, something unusual eventually arrives.

The lights are different.

The sounds from the tunnel aren't quite right.

And then comes the train that isn't supposed to be there.

Some versions of the legend say you'll hear cries and strange noises coming from inside. Others say the passengers appear strangely silent, as if they're not quite… there.

And if you make the mistake of getting on?

Well, according to the legend, you may not get off where you expected. 👻

Madrid's underground has another real-life source of ghost stories: Chamberí, a former Metro station closed in 1966. For decades, passengers on passing trains could glimpse its abandoned platforms frozen in another era — fueling stories of shadows and unexplained sounds beneath the city.

So the next time you're waiting for the Metro in Madrid, listen carefully.
