Grimes Point is an archaeological site just outside Fallon. A short interpretive trail leads through a field of large basalt boulders etched with petroglyphs.

The drawings include swirls, animals, and other shapes, some several thousand years old created by Nevada's Indigenous people. This site is easily accessed from Highway 50 and is well-worth a hike to ponder the long history of the Great Basin.

The Alfalfa Castle of Fallon – 1915 State Fair Marvel

A truly unusual sight from the 1915 Nevada State Fair in Fallon—the so-called "alfalfa palace." While the archival description calls it a palace, this structure looks more like a fortress, built entirely out of stacked hay bales. It must have been a real showstopper for fairgoers over a century ago. It was built at the corner of Center and Maine Streets. A fascinating snapshot of creativity, though it would have been great to see it captured in sharper detail.

Fire on Maine Street - 125 years later.

This photo captures the aftermath of a serious fire that hit Maine Street in Fallon, Nevada on May 19, 1910. There was just enough time to move merchandise out of harm’s way—right into the middle of the street. If you look closely, there are tea and coffee pots sitting on a display cabinet, and even a small dog standing guard beside it.

One detail that stands out is the sign still hanging on the building to the left: “Stage – Rawhide, Fairview, and Wonder.”

This 1908 photograph captures a Paiute group in full face paint moving through Fallon during a parade at the corner of Center and Carson Streets.

Their presence in the procession is a powerful reminder of their deep roots in Nevada’s history. In the background, the M.E. Hughes Undertaker business offers an unusual mix—selling pianos and phonographs alongside its funeral services.

A rare snapshot of both cultural tradition and small-town enterprise.
