📖 And here’s a story from today, in history: Imagine moving into a beautiful new neighborhood… only to discover the school bus isn’t allowed in.
That was the situation in Tega Cay, South Carolina, in 1972. Families had a marina, a clubhouse, and a golf course nearing completion. But getting the kids picked up for school? That was a whole other project.
The snag was who owned the streets. They belonged to the developer, and state law prohibited public school buses from entering private property. Paved roads and a neighborhood full of schoolchildren hadn’t solved that problem.
So the parents got moving. They signed a petition. A delegation traveled to Columbia to meet with the state transportation officer. Their community newsletter covered the fight—and caught the attention of a state legislator, who offered to help.
Then, on October 23, 1972, the school buses finally arrived.
For most neighborhoods, a yellow bus coming down the street was an ordinary morning. For Tega Cay, it was a victory. 🚌
