**TSA Discontinues Use of DoD Credentials**

Effective May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration will no longer accept Department of Defense ID credentials at security checkpoints. DoD ID cardholders should be aware that this change may impact their air travel.

When this restriction takes effect, TSA will only accept the Common Access Card for identity verification.

Identity verification is crucial to TSA’s security model, as it helps determine passenger risk and appropriate screening measures. TSA employs Credential Authentication Technology devices to identify fraudulent IDs by verifying their embedded security features. The TSA cannot accept ID cards that have indefinite expiration dates. The CAC is the only DoD ID that meets the necessary security requirements outlined in Title 10, U.S. Code, Section 1060b (Note: not all CACs may fulfill this requirement).

The TSA has clearly stated that the anti-counterfeiting physical security features present on current DoD ID credentials—such as microprinting, color-shifting ink, and holograms—are insufficient to meet TSA’s recommended anti-counterfeiting standards for other Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, and state-issued REAL ID Act-compliant ID cards.

U.S. passport holders can visit these countries without a visa for various durations. However, starting from April 10, 2025, travelers to Europe (Schengen Zone) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization before their trip. Similarly, the UK will introduce the ETA system for short visits.

Important: ETIAS and ETA are not visas but mandatory online travel authorizations. Be sure to check official travel regulations before planning your trip
