Happy Birthday, USNPS! We're pretty partial to the New River Gorge National Park!

Today marks the National Park Service’s 109th birthday!

National Park Service Founders Day celebrates the signing of the Organic Act into law on August 25, 1916 by President Wilson to establish the National Park Service. Many national parks and monuments were already established before 1916 and were managed by differing agencies, with Yellowstone being the first national park designated in 1872. The creation of the National Park Service housed all national park units under one agency to follow the Organic Act mandate “to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wildlife therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.”

Here at New River Gorge National Park & Preserve a variety of nationally significant resources are protected for future generations. The 53 miles of free-flowing river have spent millennia carving the over 1,000 feet deep New River Gorge. Today, this landscape offers ample opportunities for people to experience scenic vistas, whitewater rafting, hiking, historic sites, rock climbing, bird watching, and botanizing. No matter what piques your interest, the New River Gorge has something nearly everyone can find inspiration in.

Currently there are over 430 units across the country that are protected within the national park system. From the Grand Canyon, to the Statue of Liberty, Gettysburg, or New River Gorge, the National Park Service protects some of the most important landscapes and cultural sites in the nation. There’s a reason why the national parks are considered America’s best idea.
