In Comuna 13, color, music, and urban art have become powerful expressions of Medellín’s transformation. What was once a neighborhood marked by steep streets and difficult access is now one of the city’s most recognized examples of community-driven urban renewal. The outdoor escalators, originally built to improve mobility for residents who once had to climb hundreds of steps, became part of a larger transformation.

Today, the route is surrounded by murals, graffiti, local businesses, and stories shared by community guides. With more than 600 graffiti works across the area, Comuna 13 shows how art and community can reclaim public spaces and create new narratives inviting visitors not simply to observe Medellín’s transformation, but to experience it through the voices of the people who helped build it.
