The "bitter" bond between the berries and the bark. 🌲🍇

It is officially blackberry season here in the Santa Cruz Mountains. While you are spotting those summer berries on the trail, you might be surprised to learn they share a secret with the giant redwoods: Tannins.

Think of tannins as the forest’s natural defense system. Here is the breakdown:
1. The Redwoods: Those towering giants use tannins to ward off insects and rot. It is actually what gives the wood that iconic deep red color and helps them live for over a thousand years.

2. The Blackberries: While the fruit is sweet when ripe, the tannins in the leaves and stems help protect the plant from being eaten too early.

It is the same compound that gives your favorite tea its structure. Nature is pretty smart like that.
